Financial Strategic Coordinator



Job Description

1 permanent, full-time position

As the Financial Strategic Coordinator, you will be an individual contributor reporting directly to the Deputy City Treasurer, Branch Manager Financial Services providing hands on technical support for projects relating to finance. Supporting corporate initiatives, you’ll review business cases, research accounting principles, refine financial processes, examine financial indicators, and contribute to forecasting and business planning aspects.

The successful candidate will:

  • Work closely with the Strategic Financial Advisor and senior Financial Services branch staff to develop proactive and innovative financial strategies, implementation plans, policy options, priorities, and use of resources related to financial issues to support the City's strategic direction
  • Lead strategic analysis, projects, research, and provide advice and issue management on a variety of topics
  • Identify trends, issues and opportunities that impact the City's financial interests and implement strategies for change
  • Integrate cross-sectional projects, lead and drive outcomes that support corporate initiatives
  • Support the Strategic Financial Advisor by supporting special projects, performing accounting research, and providing financial advice based on financial best practices, current academic research, and industry trends
  • Identify and define business problems, evaluate financial alternatives, and recommend solutions
  • Coordinate & assist with branch process reviews, identification of business issues and enhancement opportunities, and assist with implementation of proposed changes


  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business or a closely related field
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CA, CMA, CGA, CPA) is preferred
  • 4 years experience in financial process evaluation techniques including business cases, budgeting, financial reporting, and ad hoc financial analysis
  • Experience in financial modeling including interpretation of results and sensitivity analysis
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, finance, financial accounting and reporting, budgeting, process controls, business and financial risk assessment
  • Knowledge of public practices and processes, legislation, economics, strategic-and business planning, policy development and program/service design is an asset
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
  • The initiative to independently identify problems, investigate outcomes, offer innovative and creative solutions, develop conceptual frameworks through strong analytical skills, and drive results
  • Proficiency in MS Office skills, primarily in Excel (pivot tables, financial modeling) and Google applications
  • Highly developed conceptual and technical skills to create and manage projects that meet the corporation’s current and future requirements
  • Ability to lead diverse projects simultaneously in an efficient manner working with tight timelines

Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
