Station Accountant

Under the direction and leadership of the Commercial Manager, we are seeking a Station Accountant to join the Sheerness Generating Station near Hanna, AB. The Station Accountant is responsible for the Station financial accounting, billing, reporting, planning and support to decision makers in the Station. 

This is a supervisory position that plays a key role in the development of the Station business plan, for making financial management decisions, as well as in the selection, development and supervision of employees. This position will also be responsible for coordination and overview of accounting related activities associated with the implementation and operation of the Power Purchase Arrangements (PPAs), Fuel Supply contracts, and Co-ownership Agreements.

Located about 200 kilometers northeast of Calgary near Hanna the Sheerness Generating Station is a major employer of people living in the farming communities. Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the day-to-day duties and supervision of the administrative staff

  • Work with direct reports to perform goal setting, facilitate development plans, perform performance reviews, and provide coaching, mentorship and provide feedback

  • Responsible for the coordination with the department managers on strategic planning, forecasting, budgeting for labour, capital expenditures and other operations and maintenance activities

  • Accountable for the maintenance and reporting of all financials for the Station including variance analysis, reconciliations, management, production, billing and capital cost reports

  • Administration, reporting and  monitoring of Power Generation with respect to the PPA,  Alberta Electric System Operations(AESO) and other internal and external stakeholders for the purpose of monthly billing review and compliance

  • Accountable for providing input on strategy, direction and support of the corporate groups for all commercial issues impacting the Station (Taxes, Insurance, environmental taxes, PPA  issues)

  • Administration, reporting and monitoring of Key Revenue, Expense and Co-Ownership contracts

  • Provide support and analysis for Operational decisions that impact revenue or expenses

  • Keep up to date on industry changes and requirements set out by AESO and government regulations pertaining to generation

  • Involved with Station and Corporate Management and the PPA Buyer Commercial group to develop and maintain the relationship and communicate ATCO’s position on issues

  • Provide financial analytical support to the Fuel Analyst around the Coal Supply Agreement

  • Participate in the development of strategies to deal with potential commercial issues for the Station  – long term forecasts, production cost of alternative fuels, variable cost of generation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce or Business with a major in Accounting or Finance

  • Completion of a Professional Accounting Designation is preferred

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role and previous supervisory experience is required

  • Experience in Corporate Financial reporting is required

  • Supervisory and leadership skills to be applied in the direction, instruction, and supervision of staff

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Effectively prioritize and be able to work under challenging deadlines while still emulating a strong customer service orientation; maintaining attention to detail; and performing at a high level of accuracy

  • Knowledge of power generation technologies and power station operations is an asset

  • Working knowledge of IFRS
