Tax Manager – Calgary

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Tax Manager will be responsible for the successful planning, execution and reporting of income tax compliance and tax accounting matters.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that Trican’s core value, “We won’t put anyone in harm’s way” is the priority in all activities
  • Review and ensure that filing of corporate and partnership income tax returns, elections and remittances are completed in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Prepare, review and co-ordinate responses to tax authorities arising from tax audits
  • Manage the movement of funds among various entities
  • Prepare and review quarterly and year-end Canadian tax provision including required note disclosure
  • Lead tax related projects as required
  • Develop technical skills by remaining up to date on trends, new developments and tax authority decisions, and proactively apply them to Trican’s situations.
  • Evaluate Trican’s tax structure and processes and develop a plan to simplify them
  • Monitor potential and actual changes to the prevailing accounting standards and assess the impact of these changes on Trican’s financial statements in a timely fashion
  • Be a main point of contract for the various service provider engagements such as SRED claims, sales tax reviews and transfer pricing.
  • Responsible for the administration and review of all monthly commodity tax return filings and payments and monthly income tax instalments.
  • Maintain professional and technical expertise through workshops, classes, professional publications, and professional associations
  • Research and prepare technical memos in support of tax technical positions taken in the financial statements and statutory filings
  • Mentor and train individuals within the Tax group and students within the CPA Rotation Program

Experience & Skills:

  • A minimum of 7-10 years’ experience working as tax manager
  • Exposure to global tax issues is an asset
  • Experience in dealing with tax authorities and financial statement auditors
  • A professional accounting designation  is preferred (CA,CGA, CMA)
  • Comprehensive technical and practical knowledge of operations, products, company policies and government regulations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when interacting with employees, management and customers
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage projects with changing and tight timelines
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly with a high attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Microsoft Excel is required
