The Alberta Electric System Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market which, in 2016, had 188 participants and approximately $2 Billion in annual energy transactions. 

Job Description

Position Summary

This position provides senior level support in the day-to-day general accounting and treasury functions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate professional maturity with a "can-do" spirit. This position provides an opportunity to demonstrate strong analytical and critical thinking skills while staying organized.  Your attention to detail, strong commitment to meeting deadlines and demonstration of independent judgment will lead to a match of your competencies and what the AESO is looking for.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities


  • Analysis of data and research for recording accounting transactions
  • Assist with month-end close procedures including preparation of reconciliations
  • Review monthly capital accounts and prepare project reports
  • Review and approve standard journal entries
  • Liaise with business unit representatives to ensure accuracy of accounting and reporting
  • Provide additional support for the accounts payable function


  • Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reports
  • Review and analysis of financial reports
  • Develop and maintain financial reports within the financial reporting system (One Stop Reporting – OSR)


  • Prepare monthly cash forecast
  • Prepare quarterly bank compliance reports


  • Assist with IT accounting software maintenance
  • Prepare corporate income tax and withholding tax filings
  • Assist with the department’s internal control development, monitoring and reporting
  • Assist with the annual financial statement audit
  • Various special projects and assignments

Education and Experience Required

  • Possess an accounting designation with minimum work experience at a senior-level for 4-6 years in an accounting department of a mid-sized organization

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong time management and workload prioritization skills, with a strong commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, challenging and dynamic environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • English language proficiency with written and spoken clarity
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products, notably Excel
  • Working knowledge of Great Plains and One Stop Reporting software would be considered an asset
