Job Description


Financial Controller:

Following a period of rapid growth through acquisitions and an aggressive drilling and development program the C.F.O. requires assistance in various accounting and reporting capacities within the organization.  This individual will have a diverse knowledge base of the various accounting, reporting, taxation and compliance functions required within a growing publicly listed oil and gas company.  With this background, the individual will be able to participate in the growth and development of the organization.     


  • Preparation of annual and quarterly financial statements and MD&A.  This will include calculating the quarterly depletion, decommissioning obligation, stock based compensation, deferred income tax and asset valuation calculations.

  • Preparation of monthly financial statements and the monthly reporting package.

  • Assisting in annual reporting requirements such as the Annual Information Form, Management Information Circular and ESTMA annual report.

  • Responsible for ensuring all IFRS reporting standards and all disclosure requirements from all applicable securities commissions are current and properly addressed.

  • Managing the annual audit and quarterly review process with external auditors.

  • Responsible for the development, documentation and testing of internal controls in adherence with all CSOX requirements.

  • Assisting with all ongoing tax requirements including all corporate tax compliance and tax filings as well as the preparation of quarterly tax provisions and monthly GST filings.

  • Assisting in budgeting and forecasting requirements with an emphases on variance analysis between actual and forecasted results.

  • Assisting in month end close procedures and providing monthly variance analysis with respect to the company’s key performance indicators.

  • Providing guidance and assistance to other accounting staff with ongoing accounting matters and providing assistance with daily accounting requirements such as banking transactions, account reconciliations and systems specifications.   

  • Managing all corporate and operational insurance requirements.

  • Assisting the C.F.O. and other members of the InPlay management with insights and assistance to improve processes, policies and procedures that will assist in the growth and development of the organization.

  • Assisting the C.F.O. with other projects or requirements that may arise.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree and a professional accounting designation are required.

  • Direct experience within the exploration and development upstream sector of the Canadian oil and gas industry. 

  • Five years of direct financial reporting and industry experience is preferred.

  • Exceptional people skills having previous supervisory experience and experience working with other departments and disciplines in an organization.

  • Current knowledge of IFRS reporting requirements within the context of an oil and gas exploration company in the upstream Canadian oil and gas sector.

  • Experience with the interpretation, development and implementation of internal controls.
