Job Description

The Accountant will contribute to and assist in leading the accurate and timely accounting, analysis and financial reporting activities for the Trust Services and Optimum Mortgage business line, as well as assist in other financial reporting activities of Canadian Western Bank Group as required and in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).


  • Prepare Trust Services Group and CFO report, along with other ad hoc reports on a weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis
  • Provide extensive analysis into net interest margin and variance investigation using assorted tools and collaborating with Business Intelligence and Application Services to produce ad-hoc reports and explain system generated entries
  • Assist in the daily and weekly processes for the Finance team
  • Complete the month end close process for the Trust and Optimum Mortgage lines of business
  • Design and test various reconciliations to ensure data is accurate and valid
  • Advise on and implement process improvement
  • Identify key processes that affect internal controls over financial reporting
  • Maintain, update and/or design documentation of ICEFR and make recommendations for improvements and remediation, if required
  • Display a strong knowledge of accounting, finance processes, systems, and business activities of the CWB group, with the ability to make judgement decisions
  • Maintain and uphold existing internal control procedures applicable to the role and identify and recommend opportunities for internal control improvements. Communicate any internal control concerns and when required, report on the status of compliance with internal controls
  • Provide consolidated financial reports to internal and external stakeholders, including internal financial statement reports such as the NIM, BMR, and the Trust Group report
  • Ability to make timely and educated decisions regarding the validity of various transactions made by branches, partner companies, and other corporate departments
  • Maintain organized documents and files
  • Act as backup for Manager, Trust Operations and Certification

  • Bachelor Degree majoring in accounting or pursuing a designation would be considered an asset. Minimum requirement for accounting diploma or equivalent experience

Professional Experience

  • Five (5) years technical accounting experience
  • Experience working in Banking industry, public accounting firm and/or public company which applies IFRS considered an asset
  • Supervisory experience would be an asset
  • Solid understanding of internal controls would be an asset
