Job Description

Under the leadership of the Assistant Controller, we are seeking a Derivatives Accountant to join our Finance department in Calgary, AB. The Derivatives Accountant will be responsible for performing all day to day settlement and derivative activities required in a power marketing business which includes the monitoring and reporting of hedge limits, other accounting policies and communicating any breaches to management. They will oversee the invoicing process and interact with counterparties to ensure settlement discrepancies are reconciled and the related cash to these transactions are properly managed. Furthermore, they are responsible for accounting and reporting activities that support the finance group.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accountable for defining hedge room limits for hedge accounting and monitoring those limits on a daily basis.

  • Maintain and oversee the hedge documentation process and prepare hedge effectiveness assessment.

  • Where applicable, work with Wholesale Trading group on hedging and forwards strategies.

  • Assist in the implementation of controls and processes on new initiatives around settlement projects or deals presented by the Wholesale Trading group.

  • Responsible for ensuring all transactions, executed by the Wholesale Trading group, captured in the Company’s trade database are accurate and confirmed with all parties within the allocated timeframe.

  • Responsible for managing the Company’s relationship with external counterparties related to commodity settlements, discrepancy resolution and cash management.

  • Responsible for calculating, analyzing and recording monthly unrealized/realized gains or losses into the Company’s General Ledger.

  • Accountable for completing monthly account reconciliations.

  • Assist with preparation of both external and internal quarterly reporting; this includes analysis of annual budget and forecasts.

  • Responsible for other accounting activities that support the Finance Group such as, but not limited to, invoice preparation and government reporting.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary degree in BComm, Accounting or Finance or equivalent is required.

  • CA, CPA, CMA or CGA designation is required (individuals within a year of completing their accounting designation may be considered).

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a similar role.

  • Back office experience (reporting and settlement of commodities, both physically and financially) is required.

  • Experience in a power-marketing environment would be an asset.

  • Good understanding of financial instrument requirements (IFRS 9 or FAS 133), an understanding of hedge accounting would be an asset.

  • Must be able to manage and analyze large amounts of data.

  • Strong excel skills would be an asset

  • Must be able to identify weaknesses in internal controls and recommend improvements.

  • Must possess initiative, good decision-making skills, and strong problem solving abilities.
