This is a newly created role with many emerging projects – a perfect opportunity for an HR professional looking to make an impact.

Reporting to the VP, Human Resources, your key responsibilities will be:

Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Supervise the Total Rewards team and provide responsible and inspirational leadership and mentoring.

  • Be an active member of the HR leadership team, ensuring effective collaboration so that HR is able to best meet the needs of the business.

  • Ensure delivery of the short and medium-term HR plan in support of the company’s strategic plan.

  • Collaborate with HR team and business leaders to develop action plans and approaches that proactively resolve complex and sensitive employee issues.

  • Responsible for monitoring and reviewing the HR operating budget and ensure cost conscious decisions are pro-actively taken.

Total Rewards Management

  • Review, approve and oversee the bi-weekly payroll of approximately 300 employees, 50 students and 16 Board members.  Ensure compliance with collective agreements, legislation and regulations.

  • Act as subject matter expert in the Human Capital Management System.  Champion the system to leverage all capabilities and lead future upgrades/implementation projects. 

  • Provide direction and oversight of multiple pension plans.  Liaise regularly with pension actuaries and sit on the internal pension committee.  Ensure accurate reporting of data to meet annual pension reporting requirements.

  • Provide direction and oversight of group benefits plan.  Act as key liaison with benefits broker and manage relationship.  Coordinate annual benefits renewals and make recommendations for approval.  Conduct budget analysis and reporting.

  • Oversee the administration of the compensation program for union and out of scope employees, including annual short term incentive program.  Complete annual salary surveys as required. 

  • Liaise with Accounting team to complete annual salaries and benefits budgets, payroll accounting, yearend processes and forecasting.

  • Develop employee communication strategies that enhance HR program delivery and keep employees informed on total rewards initiatives.

  • Understand impact of collective agreement on payroll, pension and benefits programs.  Conduct research as required on total rewards programs to assist with collective bargaining.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience managing payroll, benefits and compensation programs, and ideally in human resources leadership roles.

  • Formal designation in a related human resource field is considered an asset.

  • A track record of success in developing, implementing and communicating total rewards programs.

  • Experience in selecting and managing external vendors and key stakeholders.

  • Exemplary experience in analytical reasoning and capacity to develop recommendations that will inform and enable executive decision-making.

  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage complex, diverse responsibilities and competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.

  • Strong business acumen, with a passion and commitment for business partnership and service orientation.

  • Demonstrates exceptional judgment, discretion and professionalism.

  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal).

  • Solid understanding of relevant legislation such as the Canada Labour Code, the Canadian Human Rights Act, and the - Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

  • Keen attention to detail with the ability to effectively focus on multiple projects and priorities with a calm, focused and flexible attitude, embracing change.

  • Inspirational and motivational leadership skills with proven experience in aligning and developing high-performing teams.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identification Card (RAIC)
