Reporting to the Vice President, Financial Reporting & Treasury, the Director, Taxation will lead the tax planning and provisioning team and ensure Sobeys and Empire Company Limited (and its subsidiaries) have optimum tax processes in place which are consistently compliant with all legislative and regulatory obligations within its various jurisdictions.   You will oversee commodity customs sustainability, income tax compliance, tax planning and accounting while driving employee engagement within your department.   You will oversee all analytics and reporting relating to tax structuring, tax credit claims and recovery, audits, quarterly and annual tax provisions and disclosures and provide leadership on tax risk management.  You will ensure the team is always up to date regarding changes and developments in regulatory/ legislative matters and that any substantive changes are communicated across the organization; regularly report and present to the Executive team on the progress toward established objectives and manage the translation of the company’s strategic direction into the implementation of tax plans, priorities and objectives; consistently demonstrate effective leadership and management through the development of a highly productive and professional tax team whose skills and performance are best-in-class.

 

A proven team leader and highly skilled tax expert, the ideal candidate has a professional accounting designation and a post secondary degree in finance, economics or accounting (or equivalent), combined with at least 10 years of experience as a tax professional within or serving a complex business or public practice.  Detailed, well organized and capable of managing multiple projects, you are an excellent relationship manager and trusted advisor who has a proven track record of creating tax efficiencies and practices as well as maximizing opportunities for tax recovery; deep knowledge of OSC rules and regulations relating to financial reporting and public disclosure requirements; substantial knowledge of Canadian tax legislation (and ideally some knowledge of US tax laws) including transfer price rules and regulations; with a visible management style, you will ensure the tax team performs its accountabilities and consistently generates positive results; will build the confidence and trust of all colleagues and stakeholders with integrity and transparency; highly analytical, savvy and able to provide reliable advice and expertise to the senior management team upon which sound business decisions can made.  You will lead and manage a best-in-class tax department, will hit the ground running and add immediate value and expertise to the Sobeys tax department.
