Job Description

Reporting to the Divisional Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the monthly, quarterly and annual reporting. The Accounting Manager should have excellent knowledge and ability to comprehend and complete full cycle accounting. In addition, this position will assist with streamlining accounting processes, establishing and maintaining internal controls, budgeting and forecasting, and other special projects. The Accounting Manager is the direct supervisor of two Property Accountants and three Accounts Payable staff.

Position Overview

Duties and Responsibilities
• Responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the transactions in the general ledger and the operational cash flow reports
• Leading the day-to-day accounting operations and month end closing process including, but not limited to: review and posting of journal entries, reconciliation of bank accounts, reconciliation of intercompany transactions, reconciliation of tenant deposits, reconciliation of sub-ledger accounts, review of general ledger and balance sheet accounts, reconciliation of clearing accounts, review of property manager and corporate allocations, cash flow reporting and operational variance analysis
• Work with the Divisional Controller to streamline and improve the month end close process
• Assist in the supervision, mentoring and hiring of Accounts Payable staff alongside the Divisional Controller
• Review coding, invoice approval limits, weekly EFT and cheque runs as well as all work that is completed by Accounts Payable staff
• Oversees all WCB clearance letters and Insurance certificates are maintained/updated before releasing payments to trades
• Maintain the vendor database in both our customized property management software (MRI) and in our direct deposit system (RBC APLink)
• Support accounting department and staff by serving as back-up during busy periods
• Provide a wide variety of accounting support for accounting staff, Property Managers, management, ownership and other personnel
• Assist in the training of site and office staff in accounting procedures and MRI and trouble-shooting in problem areas
• Assists in the preparation of the Midwest year-end file and the Trust files for submission to the Auditors and Real Estate Board
• Assists in the preparation of the annual budget files and presentation packages
• Communicate with co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner
• Other projects and activities as required

Hours

Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm. May require overtime.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
• Thorough knowledge of accounting procedures, practices, and methods
• Experience with ERP systems and conversions
• Ability to use a computer and intermediate to advanced business software including spreadsheet applications and word processing
• Ability to quickly grasp the customized property management system being used
• Ability to provide and express information in a clear, concise manner, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, trades, and members of the general public
Education, Training and Experience
• At least five years relative experience in an accounting environment
• A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics or business administration as well as Accounting designation or in final stages of designation
