Tax Technician

Reporting to the Partners and Managers within the Tax Department and the Human Resource Manager, this position is responsible for the general technician duties including assisting the tax department team and all other firm members when required.  The individual will be primarily responsible for any required U.S. tax filings with any additional time available will be devoted to Canadian tax issues. Some responsibilities will include working with the other department technicians by assisting with U.S. and Canadian tax issues including but not limited to assisting with IRS and CRA Reviews, general tax research, basic accounting projects, bookkeeping, assisting in the completion of personal tax returns (Form 1040NR, Form 1040, T1’s), and some corporate tax returns (1120-F, T2’s).  Please note that on the job training will be provided as required. Further, the individual will also be responsible for assisting with integrating the Tax Department’s job tracking into the Sharepoint job tracking system and participation with the firm’s Personal Tax Team, internal personal tax processes, procedures and training during personal tax season.

An Accounting diploma or related certification from an accredited post-secondary institution and or relevant experience would be an asset.    An interest to pursue further education relating to the Tax Technician position enhancing their skillset and knowledge would also be required.

 

This motivated individual will have a positive attitude, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work under deadlines while working with a team.  An extremely high level of attention to detail, organizational and time management skills are necessary.

  • Provide assistance to Tax Partners, Tax Team and other firm members
  • Assistance with the preparation of Form 1040 and Form 1040NR filings.
  • Assistance with the preparation of Form 1120-F filings.
  • Assistance with IRS and CRA Reviews for 1040NR, 1040 and T1 requests (Annual Tax Training)
  • Assistance with the Tax Department’s “Trust” and “Terminal” packages.  Must ensure the whole package is complete.

 

Document Management

  • Assistance in the preparation of personal tax returns, terminal tax returns, corporate tax returns, GST returns

  • Contacting clients for information in the preparation of tax returns previously mentioned and follow up on IRS and CRA information requests

  • Capital dividend account elections

  • Collate information into IRS and CRA forms for tax reporting

  • Obtaining information from the IRS and CRA verbally and electronically

  • Off-peak preparation and co-ordination of any required reporting slips.

 

Project Support

  • Tax research assistance

  • Assist with the Tax Department’s software needs by working with the IT Team

  • Assist with Consulting projects from time to time

  • Occasional bookkeeping assignments

  • Tax Processes, template improvement etc.

 

Miscellaneous

  • Manage client and internal queries relating to accounting and tax issues

  • Provide support to the tax team as needed

  • Working knowledge of Caseware, Caseview, TaxPrep, Excel, Word documents and other internal programs

  • Willingness to learn basic accounting principals

  • Daily time entry of your billable and non-billable hours and some assistance with preparing wording for client invoices

  • Assistance with GST returns, GST audits, bookkeeping queries, source deductions, ROE filings

  • Review weekly tax readings and attend weekly meetings with the Tax Group

  • Research related to U.S. and Canadian Tax Law.
