Primary Purpose: The Strategic Business Advisor (SBA) is a strategic finance partner for the College of Education and supports all major financial decision affecting the College. The SBA is a value-added partner, delivering effective service to the College with priorities driven by the College. The SBA provides financial support to and works with College leaders to develop and implement solutions that achieve College priorities and outcomes. The SBA is responsible for directing and planning the detailed budget process for the College of Education, and for providing oversight and direction of special projects ensuring that a variety of special projects are identified, undertaken, and completed in support of the College of Education and University strategic direction. The SBA provides financial leadership to the College and external stakeholders relating to budget policy, authorization of operating budget resources, and on-going budget analysis, monitoring, and reporting.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Associate Director, People and Resources Relationship Management, and under the direction of the Dean of the College of Education, the SBA ensures or provides support to appropriate management and ensures optimal execution of financial strategies, frameworks, policies and procedures within the College including: financial analysis, financial management reporting, budgeting and controls, and cost management. The SBA provides effective integrated financial strategies and initiatives that support the College’s unique objectives and operational requirements.
This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of the College of Education budget as per the direction of the College, ensuring all resources are allocated equitably in accordance with Board approval and with government and external stakeholder mandates. The SBA assists College leaders with various financial activities while maintaining a strong connection to Central Financial Services and other SBAs on campus. The SBA demonstrates a combination of strong university acumen and financial functional knowledge to participate in the development of financial plans and strategies. The SBA supports the delivery of College activities and processes while contributing to the strategic and operational development of financial services across the University.
The SBA addresses complex financial matters, applying comprehensive financial management skills and offering exceptional client service, often during periods of change, high work volumes, and stringent deadlines. The SBA facilitates and assists with auditing, reporting, and accounting requirements for the College, and ensures compliance with ethical accounting standards and university policies and procedures. In providing various financial services, the SBA exercises discretion and judgment in maintaining confidential information, and applies sound practices with a consistent, proactive and collaborative approach.
The work is of high volume and complex, and decisions ranging from the mundane to critical are required on a routine basis. A high level of concentration is required for dealing with complex issues and multiple projects with competing priorities. Professional tact, judgement, and discretion is required for reviewing own and other’s work, and when providing expert counsel. The SBA routinely addresses complexities in the delivery of service, deals with emerging and unpredictable events in a sensitive and timely manner, and is expected to regularly implement difficult decisions. The position is responsible for meeting deadlines imposed by internal and external requirements and on occasion by regulatory agencies. As a result, the position requires well developed organizational and project management skills, and may require long and / or irregular hours.

- Presents and conveys accurate and timely information, data, and analysis for financially viable and sustainable decision-making and problem
- Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with all key stakeholders, including leaders from assigned units, central office colleagues, and service centre partners to ensure success in meeting the College’s and University’s strategic and operational

A relevant university degree, preferably in Commerce, Business, Accounting or related field, along with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in general accounting, financial management and budgeting, and financial planning and analysis. A professional accounting designation is considered an asset. Must have experience working in a diverse and inclusive environment. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications and a high level of attention to detail are required. Demonstrated knowledge of accepted accounting rules, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements is required.
Must possess knowledge and understanding of issues (including cultural, socio-economic and other factors) affecting Indigenous peoples and an awareness that Indigenous engagement is a strategic priority at the University of Saskatchewan. Must remain current within the finance field, including changes to rules, practices, and laws. The ability to influence outcomes and provide guidance to business decisions, and excellent analytical skills, problem solving skills, and communication skills including writing, verbal and presentation are required. Must possess the ability to work collaboratively, build relationships with internal and external partners, and manage multiple demands to meet deadlines. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
