Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accountant is responsible for the timely delivery and accuracy of various accounting activities in accordance with accounting principles and standards, relevant regulations, laws and reporting requirements, and APEGA policies, processes and procedures. This includes general ledger maintenance and preparing financial statement and forecasts.

Working as part of a team of financial professionals, the Accountant will provide and support the administration, coordination, and delivery of the Finance Department’s services. This includes cross-training and backfilling Finance team members, as required.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver on assigned day-to-day activities of the finance department in compliance with GAAP, regulations and statutory legislation, Finance policies, and APEGA’s core values
    • Maintain the accuracy of APEGA’s financial documentation
    • Educate employees and managers on Finance policies, procedures, initiatives, and services, ensuring consistency of policy application throughout the organization
  • With direction, support, and/or collaboration with the Controller, actively assist in the delivery of various financial services
    • Administration and coordination of APEGA’s full-cycle accounting and financial processes (i.e., Month, Quarter, and Year-end reporting, monthly reconciliations, internal and external audit processes)
    • Maintenance of ongoing key Financial documentation (i.e., General Ledger (GL) and sub-GLs, chart of accounts, supporting documentation)
    • Coordination of functions of APEGA’s pension fund
    • Completion of regulatory filings and remittances
    • Support in the preparation of APEGA’s Financial Reporting and assist in the development of standard internal reporting practices
    • Support in the development and maintenance of financial controls, budget, and forecast processes
  • Assist in researching, gather, and analyzing information, such as financial data, reports, and/or documents, to provide summaries, findings and/or recommendations to the Controller and Director of Finance
  • Support and assist in the continuous improvement of the Finance department
  • Assist in the implementation of APEGA’s financial operations and strategic direction
  • Provide exceptional customer service, building an excellent working relationship with all clients including members, permit holders, applicants, third-party vendors, and staff
  • Provide backfill for other Finance team members and functions, as necessary
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and current accounting principles, standards, and best practices, specifically for accounting processes
  • Knowledge of confidentiality protocols and privacy requirements
  • Knowledge of business planning and financial management
  • Knowledge of self-regulating professions and regulatory environments, with an awareness of the Engineering and Geosciences Professions Act and how it is administered

  • Strong computer skills, with knowledge and use of:
    • Microsoft Office, such as Outlook, Excel, and Word
    • Accounting systems, such as Great Plains
    • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software
