Senior Project Accountant (18 Month Term)

Role Summary:

Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Project Accountant is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the progress of construction and development projects, investigating variances from construction budgets, approving cost expenses, forecasting project results and ensuring project results are reported on a timely basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the critical review of progress claims
  • Responsible for cost tracking including job costing for all property development and construction projects
  • Completes accounts payable, change order processing, tracking and monitoring as well as journal entries
  • Process accounts receivable and inter-company transactions
  • Creates project accounts and budgets in accounting system
  • Maintains project-related records, including contracts and change orders
  • Obtains and reviews supplier invoices related to a project
  • Reviews and reports on account totals related to project assets and expenses
  • Investigates project variances and discusses with project managers
  • Responsible for submitting variance reports to management
  • Reports projects costing and project forecasting to management
  • Tracks cash flow on each project
  • Creates reports on the remaining funding available for projects
  • Closes out project accounts upon project completion
  • Prepares annual financial statements and cash flow schedule
  • Prepares project funding draws
  • Reviews loan commitments and ensures continued compliance with loan covenants
  • Communicates directly with banks, quantity surveyors, lawyers, and management groups
  • Compiles information for internal and external auditors
  • Responds to requests for more detail from customers
  • Assisting with the implementation of accounting job costing system may be required
  • Compile JV Financial Reporting Packages and Consolidated Reporting Packages
  • Responsible for the consolidated cash flow report on a weekly basis
  • Responsible for the supervisor, support and management of the Accounts Payable Coordinator

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary degree in Accounting is required
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CGA, CMA, CA, CPA) is required
  • 3-5 years' of experience in full cycle accounting is required
  • 3-5 years' of experience in construction, commercial real estate property management and development is required
  • Experience with Yardi or other computerized accounting software (i.e. Great Plains, MR, etc) is considered an asset
  • Advanced Excel skills are required
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with staff
  • Understanding of concepts and underlying details, ability to identify errors, and foresight to strategize and make decisions with consideration to both operational and financial implications
  • Ability to thrive in a flexible environment with an ability to problem solve independently
  • Strong written communication skills with high attention to detail
  • Self-motivated, results driven, prefers to work in a fast paced dynamic environment
