The Edmonton Social Planning Council is an independent, non-profit, charitable organization. Our focus is social research, particularly in the areas of low income and poverty. The strength of our voice and our role in the community is derived from the support of people and organizations concerned about social issues.

ESPC focuses on topics related to low-income and poverty. Our work includes undertaking research into the nature and scope of social issues in our community; raising public awareness and understanding of current social issues; serving as an independent voice in the community; encouraging public participation in the development of social policies; and the supporting program implementation.

Job Description

If you are passionate about equitable social policy and making a difference in your community, consider supporting the Edmonton Social Planning Council by joining our team as a volunteer member of our Board of Directors.

The Membership and Board Development Committee is currently accepting applications from individuals interested in being recommended at our spring 2018 Annual General Meeting.

All board members must be:

  • Committed to supporting the ESPC and its mission to address and research social issues, inform public discussion, and influence social policy
  • Current members of the Edmonton Social Planning Council in good standing

The Board of Directors consists of 8 to 12 members drawn from various segments of the community. A variety of backgrounds, skill sets and perspectives are valued. The term of office is 2 years, and board members are eligible to serve a maximum of 3 consecutive terms.

Board meetings are held monthly (excluding July and August), usually every second Tuesday. Board members also participate in board committees and are involved in periodic strategic planning sessions.

The deadline for the ESPC to receive applications is 11:59 pm MST on Monday, March 12, 2018.

Nominations by an ESPC member in good standing are also accepted from the floor at the Annual General Meeting. The nominee(s) from the floor may be asked to present their qualifications and commitment to the ESPC’s mission and answer inquiries from the floor prior to a vote by the ESPC membership.
