Financial Accountant

The Financial Accountant is responsible for providing essential accounting support to the Financial Services department as well as other external and internal stakeholders to the College. This position is responsible for: assisting with the preparation of various financial reports, compiling various yearend working papers & assisting with the preparation of the notes to the financial statements, completing bank reconciliations and ensuring accuracy & timeliness in all facets of financial reporting while complying with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS), as well as other accounting legislation and College policies.

Job Duties:

  • Assistance with preparation of various financial reporting packages to Government of Alberta as required including Ministry Consolidation & FIRS reporting
  • Facilitates requests for spending donated funding in accordance with donor agreements
  • Prepares financial projections for scholarships and awards, monitors award account balances and transfers donated funding to income to fund scholarship expenditures in compliance with donor agreements
  • Conducts analysis of various College events attended by students to assess compliance with Red Deer College policies CRA regulations. Prepares financial data for T4A reporting to Payroll
  • Conducts analysis of related party transactions to aid in preparing related party note to the financial statements and identifying related party transactions for GOA consolidation reporting
  • Completes monthly bank account reconciliations, monitors bank account transactions & activities and investigates discrepancies
  • Prepares monthly financial continuity schedules for all donations and endowments
  • Prepares various interim financial reports for management on a monthly basis and other departments as needed
  • Ensures accuracy of donation coding in accordance with donor agreements
  • Ensures charitable receipts are generated in accordance with CRAregulations

Qualifications:

  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree with focus in Business Administration or Accounting.
  • Three to five years of previous job-related accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Public Sector Accounting Standards & CRA legislation related to the issuance of charitable tax receipts & T4A reporting requirements
  • Ability to solve problems and exercise critical thinking
  • Experience working with an integrated financial system
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office with advanced level Microsoft Excel skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
  • Completion of accounting designation or current enrollment in the CPAprogram is preferred
