Director of Finance with the Jonker Auto Group in Langley, BC

Founded in 1990, the Jonker Auto Group is a thriving, family-owned and operated enterprise comprised of Jonker Honda and Jonker Nissan. Located in Langley, the Jonker Auto Group employs approximately 130 employees and generates revenues of about $100 million annually. The Jonker family has intentionally cultivated a respectful, collaborative workplace that is focused on excellence in operations and customer service and that seeks sustained success founded on strong ethics, sound business practices and providing value to consumers.  The family has successfully transitioned to the second generation. The planned retirement in April 2019 of the trusted and respected CFO has created a unique opportunity for a strong, collaborative leader to join the Jonker Auto Group in the role of Director of Finance. While the retiring CFO will continue to provide advice and support in non-automotive and non-operational areas of the Jonker family after retirement, over time, the family hopes that the new Director of Finance will perform to such a level and in such a manner as to earn the role of CFO.  Ideally, the new Director of Finance will start in the role by March 1, 2019.

A member of the senior management team, the Director of Finance has a mandate to safeguard and optimize the performance of the assets of the companies of the Jonker Auto Group. The role reports to two generations of the Jonker family, the Owners and General Managers of each dealership. The role is responsible for providing advice and leadership in the areas of internal controls, business operations, accounting, finance, planning, bank, human resources and information technology. The role provides support and direction to an engaged accounting team comprised of 4 experienced persons.

The candidate must have a university degree and be a CPA in good standing with at least 5 years of experience in a financial management role, ideally in a high-volume, complex business. It would be an asset to have knowledge of, and experience in, the retail automotive sector. Preferably, the candidate will have a CPA, CA. The candidate must be a collaborative, proactive, positive and respectful leader with excellent analytical, accounting, planning, listening and influencing skills. With respect and appreciation for the complexities and sensibilities of family-owned businesses, the candidate must have an open-door, approachable manner and a consistent, fair and collaborative style.  Confident, humble and curious, the candidate must have a strong work ethic and the willingness and ability to learn the “ins, outs and complexities” of the retail automotive business. A strategic thinker with a high tolerance for ambiguity, the candidate must have high integrity, abundant common sense, sound judgment and a strong orientation to service and results.  A business advisor, thought partner and coach, the candidate must have the ability to provide guidance and oversight to the accounting team and sound and varied business advice to the Owners, General Managers and Managers. Calm under pressure, the candidate must have the emotional maturity and self-awareness to recognize that trust is earned over time.  The candidate must have the capacity to work effectively with a wide range of strong and colorful personalities in fast-paced, complex, consumer-facing business. A forward-thinker and relationship builder, the candidate must have the ability to say no, when necessary, in a diplomatic and non-confrontational way and to ask thought—provoking questions that stimulate employee engagement, customer service, business improvement and success.
