The Opportunity:

Windermere Golf & Country Club is actively searching for a Controller. Candidates must be motivated to oversee the financial management of the club and ensure a sound financial model is in place to support the current and future needs of a top tier private club.

The Club:

The Windermere Golf & Country Club is an equity-based private club in Edmonton, Alberta, and exists for the exclusive use of its shareholders, associate members, their family and invited guests. Windermere’s vision is to be “The Golfer’s Private Club of Choice” and is considered by many to be one of the finest golf clubs in Western Canada. The course has seen a complete renovation and is consistently ranked within the top 100 courses in Canada by Score Golf, most recently 58th in 2022. The addition of a beautiful new clubhouse in 2011 has allowed the club to elevate its offerings to members and guests. Windermere is committed to providing the membership with an exceptional golfing and social experience.

Position Overview:

The Controller reports directly to the General Manager. The Controller is expected to take ownership of club finances and management of the administration department. This is not a typical Controller position, the successful candidate is expected to engage with members, guests and all our #TeamWindy employees.  

The Controller must be a direct communicator and have a natural style of “sincere engagement”. They must deliver on the details, have passion to offer premier service matched with strong business acumen. Innovation, collaboration, communication, and drive to exceed the expectation are all necessary attributes for the position.

Candidate Qualifications: 

  • CPA designation preferred
  • Five to seven years of professional accounting experience
  • General computer knowledge with a high-level understanding of Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication skills both written and spoken
  • Experience with a fully integrated ERP system is required
  • Knowledge of pertinent Alberta and federal employment laws and practices
  • Strong analytical and overall business awareness (big picture thinking)
  • Experience working with Not-For-Profit, Hospitality or related club industry considered an asset

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain and coordinate accounting, auditing, budgets, taxes and record keeping
  • Responsible for the club’s internal controls and compliance
  • Preparation of monthly financial statements, forecasts and analysis for all managerial functions
  • Work with the club’s appointed auditors to manage the annual audit
  • Serve as a liaison to the club’s finance committee and attend the monthly meeting
  • Responsible for tax planning and compliance with all applicable taxes and payroll filings
  • Oversee all payable and receivable accounts in a timely manner
  • Administration of the club’s benefit program
  • Understanding and involvement in managing the club’s IT needs with our service provider

Total Compensation Package: Valued between $105,000 - $120,000

  • Base salary $80,000 - $95,000
  • Bonus incentive, up to 5% of base salary
  • Medical and dental benefits etc. (additional $1,200 health spending account provided)
  • RRSP matching, up to 5% of base salary
  • Meals provided while on shift at no charge
  • 3 weeks of vacation to be used annually (plus an additional week off over Christmas)
  • Allowances provided for professional dues, continuing education, cell phone and clothing
  • Golf privileges at a top tier private club
