Who Is Our Senior Manager, Operational Accounting?

Simply stated, our Senior Manager, Operational Accounting leads out front, thriving in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, closely monitoring our organization's financial health. We are looking for a seasoned accounting leader who has a strong passion for supporting business decision-making and who will set vision and provide thought leadership to execute on complex initiatives in partnership with the Executive Director, Finance, to whom this position reports.

Our Senior Manager, Operational Accounting is responsible for assisting in the preparation of complete, accurate and timely financial information for the organization, its executives and leaders. Position Impacts & Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the full accounting cycle of the organization (operations) and ensure the month end close is completed timely and accurately.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly and quarterly internal reporting packages and provide meaningful insights and written analysis explaining variances to both the capital and operating budgets and prior year in collaboration with budget owners.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting, assist in the preparation of external quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements (including note disclosures) and MD&A and assist in the preparation of other quarterly Board and Audit and Finance Committee materials, as required.
  • Lead the annual capital and operating budget process, ensuring budget objectives are achieved through analyzing variances and working collaboratively with budget owners to understand the impact on forecasted results to the end of the fiscal year.
  • Oversee preparation of quarterly provincial government reporting and provide verbal updates to government partners at quarterly meetings.
  • Work closely with the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting and other key stakeholders to ensure that working capital is properly accounted for and cash transfers are managed timely to support operational needs.
  • Lead the Accounts Payable function for the organization.
  • Identify and promote continuous improvements, including identifying system and technology gaps and evaluating alternatives to improve efficiencies that are both flexible and scalable.
  • Play an active role in scaling up and down, applying skills where needed to ensure all deliverables are achieved.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Expertise

  • Professional accounting designation (CA/CPA) is required.
  • A minimum of seven years of progressive operational accounting experience in complex, multi-jurisdictional organizations with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet competing deadlines.
  • Three to five years of experience in a leadership position is required.
  • Established track record of strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Office 365 applications, especially MS Excel and working knowledge of data analytics tools such as Power BI would be considered an asset. 
  • Experience with not-for-profit accounting and ERP systems implementations are considered an asset.
