Senior Accountant

The CPA Western School of Business (CPAWSB) provides an innovative, competency-based learning program to more than 15,000 learners in Western and Northern Canada who are completing their formal education towards certification as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in Canada. CPAWSB delivers the CPA Preparatory Courses and the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) through a combination of online distance learning and face-to-face modules which prepare candidates for the national Common Final Examination (CFE). The School is dedicated to providing excellent service in meeting learners’ education and support needs and to working effectively with everyone.

We currently have an opportunity for a two-year term position of Senior Accountant.  This role is eligible for hybrid work, with preference given to candidates located in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba.

The Senior Accountant is responsible for leading the work for the financial monthly close, including preparing the GL working papers, JE preparation, account reconciliations and provincial GST and deferred revenue information. This role will assist the sub-ledger experts: the Accounts Receivable Specialist and the Accounts Payable Specialist.  The position is also responsible for supporting the Accounting Manager and Director of Finance to complete account reconciliations and associated working papers. The Senior Accountant will also support the interim CFO in the execution of strategic finance projects

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

  • Reconcile and prepare provincial GST on a monthly basis, including reconciliation from CRM to financial system.
  • Review payment run batches for approvals and accuracy as well as review printed cheques and Electronic File Transfer (EFT) files for payment through the bank.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations of balance sheet accounts, ensuring supporting schedules are reconciled to the general ledger and prepare working papers for review by the Accounting Manager or Director of Finance.
  • Backfill the roles of the Accounts Payable and the Accounts Receivable accountants as required.
  • Identify areas where improvements and efficiencies can be implemented and communicate to Accounting Manager or Director of Finance.
  • Prepare and post journal entries as required.
  • Assist with the year-end audit.
  • Assist the Interim CFO with the execution of strategic finance projects that align with the strategic priorities of the School. This may include documentation of processes, review of controls, tax assessments and recommendations, analysis of GAAP and accounting treatment and other projects.
  • Testing of internal controls as directed by the Interim CFO.
  • Complete ad hoc tasks as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with School privacy policies and all applicable privacy legislation when carrying out all job duties and functions and obligation to report known or suspected breaches of privacy.

Knowledge and Experience Required

Include but are not limited to:

  • A minimum of 5 years progressive accounting experience, including account reconciliations, working with large data sets, and financial analysis.
  • Professional Accounting Designation CPA preferred, or enrollment in the CPA program.
  • Post secondary degree in Accounting is required.
  • Proficiency in working with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and the use of databases.
  • Understanding of Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Ability to respond to requests for information in a prompt and accurate manner.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.

 

The salary range for this role is a minimum of $64,600 to a maximum of $96,900 per year along with a comprehensive benefits package. This role is based in one of the CPAWSB’s Western Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba and offers the successful candidate the ability to work remotely.  Some travel may be required for this position.
