Your Opportunity

As a Senior Manager, Taxation – Agriculture, you will be an essential member of our Tax Team, reporting directly to the Tax Partners. You will lead medium-sized client tax engagements, primarily focusing on agricultural clients, including owner-managed farms, agricultural cooperatives, and both public and private companies. You are a detail-oriented, curious individual with a passion for the agricultural sector, capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

Your Scope:

  • Work closely with a Partner as a senior team member, identifying tax issues and planning opportunities for owner-managed agricultural businesses.
  • Prepare and review federal and provincial income taxes for individuals, corporations, and exempt organizations within the agriculture sector, ensuring compliance with relevant tax legislation, including specialized agricultural tax programs.
  • Manage clients' high-level personal and corporate tax and GST/HST matters, with an understanding of how these apply to the unique challenges of agricultural operations, such as the treatment of farm losses, succession planning, and the sale of farmland.
  • Conduct technical research and develop tax planning strategies that cater to the specific needs of agricultural clients, making appropriate recommendations on topics such as capital gains exemptions for farmers, intergenerational farm transfers, and the Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption.
  • Assist the Audit and Assurance department with tax and GST/HST compliance matters as required, identifying cross-selling opportunities related to agricultural tax consulting services.
  • Supervise and review Canadian personal and corporate tax returns, with a focus on those within the agricultural industry.
  • Lead and mentor team members in completing corporate restructuring plans, including those for family-owned farms and agribusinesses.
  • Provide estate planning services for high-net-worth clients, particularly farmers, ensuring that tax-efficient strategies are in place for succession.
  • Manage a portfolio of agricultural clients that vary in size and scope, serving as their primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee the risk and financial performance of client engagements, including billing, collections, and managing project budgets.
  • Build and manage relationships with agricultural clients, advising them by delivering high-quality tax services and insights on tax-efficient farming strategies.
  • Participate in market meetings and contribute to firm-wide business development activities, with a focus on the agricultural industry.
  • Coach and manage junior team members, conducting timely performance reviews, providing feedback, and supporting their development in agricultural taxation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify tax consulting opportunities and a willingness to market services aggressively to existing and prospective clients in the agricultural sector.

Your Qualifications:

  • A Professional accounting designation (CA, CPA, CGA or CMA)
  • Completion of the CICA In-depth I, II and III tax program, or Masters in Tax
  • Strong Technical background in a public practice services firm with a further 2-3 years of post-designation experience after the completion of the in-depth, level I, II, III program:
  • Significant tax compliance and/or planning experience
  • Proficiency in Tax software, Caseware, Excel, and Word
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, capable of multitasking various tasks, projects, and strategic improvement initiatives
