Job Title: Financial Empowerment Taxation and Benefits Filer (Volunteer)
Length of Term: 6 months to 1 year with potential of extension to allow for consistency of service
Department: Financial Empowerment
Time Commitment: minimum 3 hours per week (more is appreciated)
Time of Day: Flexible volunteer schedule, weekdays (morning, afternoon and/or evenings)
Purpose of the Position:
The Financial Empowerment Taxation and Benefits Filer volunteer role will support the Financial Empowerment department in completing simple taxes on behalf of participants.
Impact of this Role
- You’ll directly impact people living on lower incomes by providing them with an immediate income boost and access to their entitled benefits and credits.
- Your support will allow participants to attain temporary financial stability, making a significant impact on individuals who are living paycheque to paycheque.
- Your tax clinic will motivate participants to access future Financial Empowerment interventions so they can leverage this income to build long-term assets and financial stability (facilitated by Momentum’s programs and partner organizations).
Duties/Responsibilities
- Preparing tax returns for eligible individuals
- Completing anonymous tracking sheet
- Participating in tax volunteer training (training will be provided, if required)
- Available for a minimum of 3 hours a week (morning, afternoon and evening shifts)
- Momentum provides year-round tax clinics – preference is given to those who can volunteer year-round
- Can deliver tax filing live in-person or live remotely from home
Skills, Experience, and Qualifications
- Must be willing to register with CRA as a CVITP Volunteer, apply for Represent a Client ID and an E-Number
- Comfortable working alone with participants. Staff will be on-site for support
- Clear Criminal Record Check
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Have a basic understanding of how to prepare a tax return
- Be comfortable with inputting data and use of computers.
- Have a genuine interest in supporting people in your community
- Previous experience working with multicultural and/or highly barriered participants
- Be compliant with CVITP policies and procedures and be willing to affiliate with a community organization
- Fluent in written English (a second language is an asset)
- An asset would be filing taxes for sole proprietors
Supervision and Training:
- Reports directly to the Tax Time Savings Facilitator.
- All training will be provided and arranged by Momentum.
- All tax software provided.
