Autism Aspergers Friendship Society (AAFS) of Calgary is looking for an accountant to join our board of directors as Treasurer.
AAFS exists to provide people with autism with opportunities to be their best selves and create a better world for everyone. We see a world where we accept each other and have the opportunity to live a fulfilling life, filled with friendship, love and play. The AAFS mission is to provide an accepting environment for members of the Autism Community to cultivate friendships and social skills and connect to the greater community.
The Treasurer is an Executive position on AAFS’s Board of Directors whose responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are in place and operating effectively to ensure that AAFS financial resources are utilized in accordance with AAFS policies and good governance
- Chairing regular (generally monthly) Finance Committee meetings to go over the most recent internal financial reports and deal with other financial matters that arise from time to time
- Attending regular (generally monthly) Board meetings and regularly reporting to the Board on the financial results and financial position of the organization. From time to time, the Treasurer may also be involved with committees or initiatives related to financial matters and advise on financial implications of key decisions and AAFS strategic plan.
- Overseeing the financial reporting process and presenting the annual audited financial statements to the Board of Directors for approval and at the Annual General Meeting. Liaise with AAFS external auditors, as deemed appropriate
- Assisting in the annual budget preparation process, including its presentation and discussion with and the approval of the Board of Directors
- Supporting the effective governance and leadership of the organization
- The Treasurer must balance the need for adequate information to oversee responsibilities without assuming direct involvement in the operations and record-keeping of AAFS.
- The Treasurer’s role is best filled by someone with accounting and/or finance experience. Knowledge and experience in the non-profit sector would be beneficial, but not essential.
