Western Irrigation District (WID) is an irrigation district established under Section 5 of the Irrigation Districts Act. The purpose of each irrigation district is:

  • To convey and deliver water through the irrigation works of the district;
  • To divert and use quantities of water with the terms and conditions of its license under the Water Act;
  • To construct, operate, and maintain the irrigation works of the district; and
  • To maintain and promote the economic viability of the district.

WID is looking for a detail orientated and enthusiastic Financial Accountant to join our Accounting and Finance Team, located in Strathmore, Alberta. WID is looking to start this new hire during the first quarter of 2025. This is a new role for the Irrigation District and will report to the Senior Manager, Finance of the Organization. The role will include full responsibility of full cycle accounting and financial statement preparation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Financial Statement Preparation:

  • Complete full-cycle accounting entries by posting non-cash accrual entries for amortization, depreciation, gains or losses on sale of equipment, investments, and any other adjusting entries required to properly account for transactions under Generally Accepted Accounting Standards (GAAP).
  • Prepare department specific analysis of actual results to budgeted results and update forecasts or estimates where necessary to complete the monthly budget cycle.
  • Prepare for review the organizations’ monthly financial statements, Board of Directors’ Financial Report, and other financial reporting requirements.
  • Prepare financial statements and reconciliations for the year-end audit.

Month End Reconciliations:

  • Reconciliation of Prepaid Expenses, Inventory Transactions, Investment Transactions, and Deferred Revenue monthly.
  • Reconciliation of Billing and Invoice Transactions from the Billing System to the General Ledger in the Accounting System.
  • Reconciliation of the Accounting Transactions to the Project Job Costing Reports.
  • Reconciliation of grant fund expenditures to the allowable expenditure listings of the grant funding agreements.
  • Preparation of Bank Reconciliations that balance the bank statement to General Ledger Accounts.

Compliance:

  • Prepare or assist with the draft preparation of General Sales Tax (GST) Returns.
  • Prepare or assist with the preparation of Grant Funded Project Reporting.
  • Prepare or assist with the preparation of annual forecasts and budgets.

Accounts Receivable and Payable:

  • Review and approve accounts payable transactions in the accounting system.
  • Prepare vendor payment EFT batches, cheque runs, and pre-authorized debit transactions in the accounting system. Seek approval and process payment transactions.
  • Record applicable credit memos, deductions, and terms of services in our Accounting System.
  • Monitor accounts payable accounts to ensure that vendors are paid on a timely basis and payment discounts are recognized.

 

The ideal candidate will have a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. The following experience and qualifications are also desirable for a candidate:

  • Experience with Canadian Accounting Standards for not-for-profit organizations that receive grant funding is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in the use of computer programs (MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with Sage Accounting System or other Enterprise Resource Management (ERP) systems is considered an asset.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills to simultaneously handle and prioritize multiple tasks/projects.

 

 

 

Full time or Part time:                        Full-Time Equivalent Salaried Position

Annual Salary Expectation:               Between $90,000 and $100,000

Annual Other Benefits:                      Vacation Accrual as per the Employment Standards Code

Medical Plan

Hours of Work:                                   8:00AM to 4:30PM from Monday to Friday

(2,080 Hours per Annum; 40-hours per week)
