About the Company:

Northbase Finance Inc. ("Northbase" or “Company") is a privately held specialty finance company. We leverage capital from our financing partners to provide customized flexible financing solutions to our client base across North America. Northbase provides equipment financing for essential operating assets in the form of new equipment leases, asset sale-leasebacks, rentals, and outright asset sales.

The Northbase team, together with its strategic partners, consists of highly skilled and experienced industry experts, investment professionals, and gas compression and processing specialists. The Company has grown rapidly since inception and is well capitalized to continue its expansion through 2025 and beyond.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a suitable candidate to join our team to support the Company's expanding platform and play a vital role in the continued growth and success of our business.

In this role, you will support the execution of our strategic plan, while gaining valuable experience and exposure to accelerate your career. The Senior Corporate Development Associate (“Associate”) will have direct access to the executive team and investment committee of Northbase, providing unique exposure related to corporate operations, transaction analysis and deal execution.

The Associate will be based in the Calgary office, reporting directly to the Executive Vice President, Corporate Development and will also work closely with the CEO and CFO, as required.

To succeed in this role, you must have strong communication skills, be highly motivated and focused, and have a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy. Your ability to work independently, as well as on a team, using your robust problem-solving skills and analytical abilities, will serve you well in this role.

The primary responsibilities of this role will be supporting corporate development initiatives, conducting industry-related research, maintaining compliance records of existing clientele and supporting the leadership team in new-business decision making. This will include evaluating new transaction leads, conducting due diligence on equipment/assets, credit risk review and underwriting of new counterparties, reviewing transaction documentation, creating and maintaining market research on industry segments, geographical areas and potential transactable ideas, advising the leadership team on suitability of transactions, and preparing transaction memos for the investment committee. The successful candidate will also support ongoing credit monitoring of existing portfolio clients and update the corporate model, as required.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Analysis and review of counterparty and equipment due diligence materials.
  • Develop investment committee memos to provide recommendations and support for/against potential transactions.
  • Assist in the development of new growth opportunities by identifying, evaluating, and supporting negotiations of asset acquisitions and funding.
  • Lend support in the review of legal documentation, including non-disclosure agreements, confidentiality agreements, term sheets and commercial agreements.
  • Support the execution of underwriting procedures.
  • Assist with ongoing post-transaction integration activities, as required.
  • Monitor existing asset portfolio and ensure clients meet monthly/quarterly compliance requirements.
  • Develop an understanding of the driving forces behind fundamental industry dynamics (O&G, energy, power, industrial/commercial etc.) to support the development of industry research.
  • Distil information and analysis into useable, easily digestible charts, graphs, and tables.
  • Review, summarize and provide timely updates on critical industry-related news flow to management.
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations for delivering information and recommendations to management.
  • Support corporate development initiatives, including creating and maintaining a database of potential transactable ideas.
  • Develop an understanding of customer motivations and needs across Northbase's operating regions and industries.
  • Perform financial scenario analysis to support the evaluation of changing business and industry economics.
  • Review client delinquencies, including delinquency trends, late payments or increased risk exposure; assessing and / or updating aging reports and non-performing leases.
  • Update corporate models for recently onboarded counterparties and historical financial results.
  • Develop stress testing scenarios that model the financial impact of rising delinquency rates, prolonged non-payment or sector specific downturn. If required, adjust sensitivity assumptions for liquidity risk, funding availability and cash flow coverage ratios.

  • Have a well-rounded understanding of and ability to research the fundamental drivers of the various industries Northbase participates in.
  • Apply quantitative analysis techniques and judgement to develop well-reasoned recommendations and communicate them effectively.
  • May have the ability to review and understand legal documentation (NDA's/CA's, term sheets and commercial contracts), which would be considered an asset.
  • Work with sensitive and confidential information.

 

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Accounting, Economics, or other relevant post-secondary education.
  • CFA or equivalent considered an asset but not required.
  • Previously established industry relationships considered an asset but not required.
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in finance, business development or corporate development.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills; advanced Excel skills are a must.

 

Salary, Vacation & Benefits:

We offer a competitive compensation package, including a base salary, commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, and participation in the Company’s bonus pool based on corporate and individual performance. Annual vacation allotment for this role is three (3) weeks.
