Senior Commodity Tax Specialist

We are looking for a Senior Commodity Tax Specialist to join our Finance department in the Corporate Head Office to prepare and manage all commodity tax returns for CWB Group.  Our small group works in an open, fast-paced, team orientated environment and is seeking someone who is highly focused and adaptable in an ever-changing environment.  This is an opportunity to truly have impact: In this newly created position we are looking for someone who wants to jump in, roll up their sleeves and put their specialist knowledge to work. The successful individual will possess solid commodity tax experience including strong tax research and analytical skills where organization and attention to detail play a key role. 

As the owner of commodity tax returns, this expert will ideally utilize their previous financial institution experience to dig in, pursue and formalize a process in terms of how we’re handling this specialized area.  This will mean applying detailed technical skills to understand sales tax implications, while grasping the bigger picture and being able to apply a high-level approach to processes all while fielding inquiries from different client groups.

 What you will do:

  • Manage / prepare all provincial sales tax returns and GST returns including all GST returns specific to financial institutions.

  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures to support efficient and effective commodity tax compliance processes and minimize commodity tax audit risks.

  • Assist with the development of a model/process to appropriately capture ITC’s for financial institutions.

  • Research and analyze the impact of federal and provincial tax law changes to the CWB Group.

  • Maintain monthly reconciliations of the commodity tax G/L accounts.

  • Perform analytical review of the G/L accounts and monthly transactions for applicability of commodity tax and follow-up with staff as required.

  • Ensure the payment of taxes, filing of returns and accounting entries are executed on a timely basis.

  • Understand a financial institution’s requirements to self-assess commodity tax and monitor process to ensure compliance.

  • Manage federal and provincial government commodity tax audits including the gathering of information, reconciliations and drafting responses to audit queries.

  • Ability to communicate with the Canada Revenue Agency and provincial tax authorities.

  • Assist with the determination of taxable/exempt status of products/services offered.

  • Assist with various projects including the review of draft contracts and agreements for appropriate sales tax clauses.

  • Team with non-finance departments to address commodity tax issues including providing day-to-day support to the branches and partner companies.

  • Ability to communicate commodity tax implementation procedures throughout CWB Group.

  • Maintain open communication, accountability and strong work ethic.

What you will have accomplished: 

Education

  • Bachelor of Commerce or Business Administration degree majoring in accounting.

  • Accounting designation (CPA) is a requirement.

  • Completion of in-depth GST/HST Course or equivalent CRA training is strongly desired.

Professional Experience

  • 3 – 5 years of commodity tax experience, preferably in the financial services sector.

  • Strong technical knowledge of the Excise Tax Act.

  • Proficiency in MS Excel, particularly with disseminating large volumes of data.

  • Solid analytical and organizational skills with the ability to efficiently conduct tax research.
