Description of Charity/Foundation:
The Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) is an independent body with the authority to establish auditing and assurance standards that apply to all Canadian entities in both the private and public sectors, including profit-oriented enterprises, not-for-profit organizations, governments and other entities in the public sector. The AASB is responsible for setting Canadian Auditing Standards for financial statement audits, and other assurance and related services standards. Final standards are issued in the CPA Canada Handbook – Assurance.

Description of Role:
This demanding but rewarding volunteer role involves a time commitment of approximately 250 hours per year, including preparation and meeting time. The AASB normally meets in person in Toronto five times and holds two to four conference calls annually. Travel and other related costs are reimbursed.

The appointments would take effect April 1, 2019, for a three or four-year term, with a possible renewal term.

The working language of the AASB is English.

Certification/Education Required:
The Auditing and Assurance Standards Oversight Council (AASOC) is seeking three practitioners to join the AASB:

Two practitioners that are partners with small/medium accounting firms or a sole practitioner; and
one legislative auditor that is a senior member of an office of the auditor general of a Canadian province or a major Canadian city.

Practitioner expertise in the following areas would also be valuable:

Emerging technologies such as data analytics, artificial intelligence cryptocurrency and blockchain.
Information technology, namely accounting applications, auditing applications and information systems.
Process improvement.

In addition, candidates for these positions will be evaluated against the following criteria:

A strong public interest perspective and an ability to serve in their personal capacity;
sufficient time and scheduling flexibility;
knowledge in a specialized sector (although members are chiefly sought to bring broad perspectives); and
the ability to work collaboratively to reach a consensus to develop high-quality standards.

AASOC also considers the professional composition, geographic location and gender balance of the AASB. Members will be selected so that the AASB membership reflects a broad cross-section of those affected by assurance and related services standards.
