Financial Analyst

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Financial Analyst is responsible for preparing financial reports for the College.  As well, the Financial Analyst is responsible for monitoring the financial and non-financial performance of the College and for providing reliable and timely information and analysis to the business leaders to guide them in the decision making process.

Internal and External Reporting - 70%

  • Month end closing and reporting process (draft financial statements, supporting schedules, journal entries and monthly balance sheet reconciliations).
  • Provides financial support to the business units (budget support, answer financial questions).
  • Supports the annual budgeting and forecasting processes (provides analysis and feedback to business units).
  • Reports and analyzes of key performance indicators.
  • Analyzes and interprets financial and operational performance, and tracking key operational objectives and strategic initiatives to improve the efficiency and profitability of the business units.
  • Preparation of the year end working papers.
  • Preparation of  various government reports (FIRS, Advanced Education, Charities Returns, Stats Canada, etc).
  • Develops ad hoc queries and reports for management.
  • Analyzes financial data using custom queries and extracts.
  • Reviews and recommends new reports.

 

Banking and Investments - 20%

  • Quarterly investment revenue recognition entries including completing investment working papers and schedules.
  • Cash flow forecasts.
  • Provides back-up support for weekly cheque runs, approving electronic wire transfers and bank reconciliations.

 

Other - 10%

Assists and provides financial expertise to College staff on accounting and operational business issues.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree – Business Administration.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a financial analysis and/or financial reporting position.
  • Excellent communicator with strong written and verbal skills.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.

 

Preferred

  • Accounting designation CPA-CA, CPA-CMA, CPA-CGA.
  • 4 years in a financial analysis and reporting position.
  • Experience in post-secondary institutions is an asset.
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and capable of building and maintaining productive and supportive working relationships.
  • Proficient user of computer software applications.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired will be considered.
  • Experience in financial statement preparation, including notes to financial statements.
  • Experience in budget preparation.
  • Experience in spreadsheet financial modeling.
  • Experience in financial statement preparation, including notes to financial statements.
