Director of Corporate Services

The Opportunity

As the governing body for Alberta’s real estate brokerage, mortgage brokerage, property management, and real estate appraisal professionals, the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) is committed to the public interest by promoting the integrity of the industry and protecting consumers.

RECA is searching for our next Director of Corporate Services to assist in the stewardship of our mandate and provide support for the strategic plan. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Corporate Services is a key member of the senior leadership team providing strategic and operational leadership to support the RECA business plan. The Director will oversee the financials, administration, human resources, information technology, and legal services of the organization. Key responsibilities include stewardship of governance, compliance and control, and business ethics.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

Finance and Administration

  • provides leadership and advice to the Finance & Administration Manager, who is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions, accurate and timely financial reporting, preparation of the organization’s annual budget, coordination of the annual external audit, and ensuring appropriate insurance products are in place
  • ensures the financial integrity of the organization through the monitoring, development and implementation of internal control systems to provide operational stewardship and accountability to the Executive Director and Council
  • oversees the preparation of the annual budget to Council to ensure resources are available to achieve RECA’s strategic initiatives
  • acts as the staff resource to the Finance and Audit Committee providing oversight of RECA’s Business Resilience Program in the event of a crisis
  • negotiates, manages and reviews contracts for equipment leases, office supplies, and equipment to support the operational requirements of the organization, maintains up-to-date consultant, vendor/supplier documentation, including vendor lists, RFPs, contracts, and service level agreements
  • evaluates risks impacting the operational activities of the organization and ensures appropriate levels of risk management controls and insurance coverage

Information Technology

  • provides leadership and support to the Information Technology Manager
  • guides the Information Technology Manager in the development, maintenance and administration of the information technology network, data centre, and desktop infrastructure supporting the operational and regulatory requirements of the organization
  • directs the development and implementation of the Information Technology Strategy that aligns with the strategic objectives of the organization
  • provides oversight of the operation and maintenance of the security system and infrastructure in the RECA building
  • supervises the development and implementation of an enterprise information security program
  • oversees the collection, dissemination, retention, and destruction of information and records in the custody of the organization in accordance with the legal requirements and RECA’s document retention policy

Human Resource Management

  • provides leadership and advice to the Human Resources Manager
  • oversees the development, implementation, and monitoring of Human Resources programs, policies, priorities, and objectives for the organization, ensuring alignment with the overall corporate strategy
  • supervises the establishment and maintenance of compensation strategy, which includes elements such as job evaluation, salary, wage and grade structures, pay policies, employee benefits programs, and rewards and recognition
  • creates a dynamic, engaging organizational culture and work environment by implementing policies, practices, and programs which contribute to a positive employee relations climate and positions RECA as an employer of choice
  • prepares, implements and maintains standards, policies, and operating procedures ensuring that health and safety standards are met, and that emergency procedures are clear and effectively communicated to employees

Legal Services and Corporate Governance

  • offer leadership, advice, and mentorship to the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary in the delivery of legal services, corporate legal advice, and Corporate Governance to support the organization’s strategic, operational, regulatory, and corporate governance requirements
  • promotes strong corporate governance policies and practices to ensure meetings of the Council and committees are conducted in accordance with corporate policy and compliant with legislative and regulatory requirements
  • oversees litigation management, ensuring practices are developed to manage litigation risks, civil actions against the organization, council members and staff, enforcement of industry professional debt obligations, and consultation with the corporate insurer on litigation direction and strategy

 

Skills & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a high level of education that relates directly to the role. This can include:

  • a Masters of Business Administration
  • a law degree and membership with the Law Society of Alberta (or other Provincial Law Society)
  • a professional accounting designation (CPA) alongside senior financial leadership experience

The next Director of Corporate Services will have extensive experience in a complex organization at a senior leadership level. Preference will be given to senior leadership experience in a government or regulatory setting. Relevant experience will include:

  • 10+ years of related experience at a senior leadership level, including experience managing diverse work units and professionals
  • strong business acumen with proven experience in change management leadership experience in a progressive organization and team
  • proven experience with project management
  • experience with governance at the committee and board level is preferred
