Senior Accountant, Real Estate Financial Operations (Fixed Term - 12 Month)

Position Summary

As part of the Real Estate Financial Operations team, the Senior Accountant will hold the following accountabilities:

  • Responsible for applying accounting principles and analyzing financial data received directly from properties, and ensuring appropriate accounting treatment
  • Prepares accurate and timely consolidated financial reporting at various legal ownership levels
  • Acts as the accounting point of contact for external property and asset managers
  • Assists in the development of accounting procedures and establishing standard operating procedures for financial reporting of property activities
  • Performs various accounting functions for the real estate domestic portfolio
  • Prepares ad-hoc financial and/or statistical reports

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Set up properties, entities, roll up and cascading rules in the Yardi real estate management system
  • Collect property financial data from the external managers on a monthly basis; upload to our systems, review, validate, and reconcile to AIMCo investment records and property financial statements (which may be on a different basis of accounting such as IFRS or ASPE)
  • Reconcile investment and other transactions between Yardi and SimCorp portfolio accounting system on a monthly basis. Ensure variances are communicated to Real Estate Investment Administration team and addressed in a timely manner
  • Reconcile applicable bank accounts weekly or monthly as required
  • Prepare month, quarter, and year-end consolidated financial statements, working papers and reporting packages
  • Complete ad-hoc projects, reports, and other tasks as requested by management

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Degree or Diploma with an emphasis on Accounting, supplemented with three to five years of accounting experience in financial systems, budgets, reporting and data analysis. Commercial real estate background is an asset
  • Completion of, or working towards a professional accounting designation program (CPA)
  • Prior experience with Yardi Property and Asset Management Software is preferred
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, including International Financial Reporting Standards and Canadian GAAP
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data, prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections, draw conclusions and make recommendations based on information presented
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • An inquisitive attitude and a desire to learn new things
