Municipal Internship Program - Finance Officers

The Program

The Alberta Municipal Internship Program introduces new and recent graduates to careers in local government across Alberta offering a challenging and rewarding experience. During the 12 month program, interns gain valuable knowledge and experience and develop skills and competencies in municipal administration and management through a combination of hands-on work experience, learning, mentoring and professional development.

The Role

Interns learn about municipal accounting and finance through the full accounting cycle, from budget to taxation to year-end and audit preparation. You will also rotate through key departments to understand how they operate. Responsibilities and activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in budget discussions with council and management
  • Preparing payroll
  • Processing accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Producing financial reports
  • Preparing for borrowing, preparing financial records for audit
  • Supporting procurement initiative

Criteria For Success

We seek individuals who have a desire to explore a career in local government and/or the public sector. Candidates should have an interest in becoming leaders in their communities. Attributes of a successful candidate include:

  • Able to understand complex financial matters

What We Can Offer You

Interns receive a salary, benefits, and training allowance. Support can also be provided to those pursuing CPA designation. Interns are supported by senior managers and leaders who provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to them as new professionals in municipal government. Interns gain extensive knowledge of municipal management, finance, and policy as they participate in a variety of activities to develop their financial analysis and management skills.

Locations

There are 6 positions available, 1 at each of the following locations:

  • City of Red Deer
  • Cypress County
  • Sturgeon County
  • Town of High River
  • Town of Strathmore
  • Town of Taber

Who Can Apply

Graduates of a post-secondary degree or diploma program specializing in accounting or finance completed between January 1, 2017 and May 31, 2019. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada and be willing to relocate to or be within commuting distance of the host municipality.
