Reporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting, this position upholds and supports components of TransAlta and TransAlta Renewables’ internal control and compliance processes to prevent material financial misstatements in line with requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) legislation and the COSO 2013 framework.  The Analyst, Corporate Compliance & Reporting works collaboratively with the internal auditors, external auditors and the business units to support TransAlta’s Control/SOX framework by proactively identifying areas of focus, assisting in minimizing control deficiencies through regular communication with the process owners, working with the business units to resolve or remediate control deficiencies identified.  This position is also accountable for a broad range of daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly activities and implements all administrative procedures and processes in adherence to organizational policy.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensuring TransAlta’s corporate compliance and reporting processes are aligned with components and principles of TransAlta’s control framework.  Administer and facilitate procedures, processes and documentation for internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) quarterly disclosure certifications and controls for both TransAlta and TransAlta Renewables, including entity level controls.
  • Support on any implementation/training related to SOX, including SOX reporting compliance tool to process owners and other stakeholders.  Provide guidance and support to business process owners with control review, design and implementation.
  • Provide a professional interface with our external auditors (Ernst & Young).  Assist with the preparation, coordination and delivery (legal reviews, edits and signatures) of audit/prospectus engagement and representation letters for multiple companies. 
  • Partner with the business units by evaluating control deficiencies, track remediation to completion, identify key internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) risks and mitigation strategies.  Research and draft memos for positions on deficiencies identified to substantiate managements position.
  • Provide internal and external auditors assistance with understanding or obtaining evidence from business units when required.
  • Create and maintaining procedures for tracking, reviewing and updating Corporate Finance policies. Ensure stakeholders are informed of new policies or policy updates.
  • Facilitate, produce, distribute and compile annual acknowledgements, acceptance and adherence to Finance Code of Ethics for all employees in finance roles.
  • Produce, distribute and compile results of Competency Tracker for all Finance employees.
  • Manage, authorize and audit network folder access. Administer and maintain compliance for staff access to files and folders for several shared drives.
  • Manage a broad range of monthly and quarterly deliverables. Collect, edit and distribute finance materials for Executives, Board and Committee meetings (TransAlta, TransAlta Renewables, Non-Public entities and Pension). 
  • Provide timely status updates by communicating observations, risks and potential roadblocks.  Prepare periodic reporting to management and the c-suite, as necessary.  Effectively escalate issues to appropriate levels of management.
  • Assist as a back-up for the Financial & Compliance Analyst, as needed.

Qualifications & Skill:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, accounting, economics,  or other relevant education
  • Qualified or enrolled in CPA program
  • 3-4 years of post-graduate or related work experience
  • Strong knowledge of SOX and COSO frameworks.
  • Knowledge of internal control practices and audit procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint and SAP
  • Confidence to make appropriate decisions, embrace challenges and take necessary actions
  • Knowledge of corporate standards and policies
  • Strong analytical, planning and multi-tasking skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
