Manager, Financial Reporting and Research

The Banff Centre is seeking a Manager, Financial Reporting and Research.

The Opportunity

The Manager, Financial Reporting and Research is responsible for overseeing external financial reporting, accounting research and policy development, the execution and delivery of institutional financial/tax reporting including the completion of external audits, the financial management of Banff Centre endowments, and the delivery of financial services that meet the needs of campus financial managers/departments. 

 

Specific Accountabilities

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Planning, the Manager, Financial Reporting and Research will also work closely with various institutional stakeholders especially as it relates to managing special projects and workflow.  Below are some key accountabilities

Financial Reporting

  • Coordinates the year-end closing of the books, establishing timelines and procedures for processing by Financial Services and campus departments, and assigns and oversees tasks required to complete the year-end close. 
  • Prepares and/or reviews the year-end financial statements for both Banff Centre and Banff Centre Foundation, ensuring compliance with GAAP accounting standards; prepares financial submission to Advanced Education to support consolidation of public entity statements.

Research and Policy Development

  • Performs accounting, tax and legislative research and develops appropriate policies. Monitors developments and updates processes and policies as required. 

Tax and Compliance

  • Reviews for filing all Canadian and US tax returns for Banff Centre and Banff Centre Foundation. Ensures the timely completion of all corporate filings and compliance with the unclaimed property laws and other provincial/federal legislation applicable to financial matters.

Audit, Controls, and Systems

  • Primary contact for external auditors to plan and coordinate the interim and year-end audits for Banff Centre, Banff Centre Foundation and other financial audits as required.
  • Proactively identifies and addresses internal control issues and other financial concerns.  Develops accounting system and control policies and monitors compliance to ensure the protection and control of the Centre’s financial assets. 

Endowments and Grants

  • Ensures the integrity and accuracy of all endowment fund records.  Determines the annual allocation of endowment earnings and amounts to be distributed for spending in accordance with donor restrictions and Banff Centre utilization policies.
  • Reconciles endowment activity and fund balances with Development Office to support external matching grants, donor annual reports, and reports to the Board on the endowment.
  • Reviews for filing all reports of activity on program operating and special purpose grants, assists departments in gathering data from Banff Centre financial systems to comply with grant reporting requirements.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • 5+ years of financial accounting experience. Experience working in a public accounting practice is required.
  • CPA designation is strongly preferred.
  • University Degree in Finance or Business or related field.
  • Experience in being fully responsible for financial systems, records, data and accounts.
  • Current knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and financial reporting standards for the public sector, taxation laws and regulations.
  • Understand of the management control and accounting principles, procedures and processes as they apply to the public sector/not-for-profit organizations.
  • Prior experience in a non-profit environment is desirable.
  • Technically proficient with accounting software and related applications (e.g. Microsoft NAV, Prophix, etc.).
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Works well independently and within a team.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively and productively with all levels of staff.
