Financial Accountant

We currently have an opening for Financial Accountant in our Head Office located in Edmonton. This is responsible for the full-cycle accounting for a P&C insurance company and ensuring the financial statements accurately records the performance of branches and the parent company. More specifically, the responsibilities would include the following:

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting and Analysis:

  • Prepare, examine, and analyze production reports and translate them into journal entries and assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards
  • Assist in month-end closing including responsible for appropriately recording accruals and adjusting previous accruals if actual payments have been processed
  • Ensure account reconciliations and/or working papers are complete and appropriate follow-up on discrepancies and variances discovered on balance sheet and income statements
  • Month-end process is accurately completed by specified deadlines
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and provide feedback on the need for new accounts (or attributes) and the removal of dormant or non-value accounts (or attributes)
  • Provide value-added analysis in the assigned area of responsibility to assist managers and staff in operational decisions
  • Participate in interim and year-end audits and implement internal audit improvements
  • Complete bank reconciliations on several bank accounts
  • Conduct special projects to provide advice and recommendations required by management
  • Perform other duties as required including backing-up other personnel in the department

Reporting:

  • Work as part of a larger team to provide monthly financial statements and related analyses for management within tight reporting deadlines
  • Responsible for accurately completing statutory filing well-ahead of reporting timeframes
  • Assist in other reporting to authorized third-parties such as external auditors, IBC, CRA and credit agencies
  • Assist in the coordination of the annual reinsurance renewal and data for the external independent actuary
  • Prepare the cash forecast report at regular intervals
  • Assist in the analysis and implementation of new accounting standards, specifically IFRS 17 – Insurance Contracts

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Professional designation required (CPA)
  • 2 or more years of progressively responsible experience in full-cycle accounting, including and experience with budgeting, analysis, forecasting, financial operations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reporting and analysis, auditing
  • Strong working knowledge of IFRS, including the ability to analyze and interpret accounting standards
  • Previous experience in insurance or other financial services is considered an asset
  • Strong problem solving skills, accounting principles knowledge, documentation skills, research and resolution skills, data analysis and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Strong self-initiator with an ‘ownership’ attitude
  • Positive attitude and excellent ability to work independently and within a team in dynamic environment, handling multiple tasks concurrently
  • Able to process vast amounts of data efficiently and provide meaningful interpretations of data outputs
  • Ability to understand and analyze financial information; determine and mitigate risk
  • Verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to draft reports and memos that will be presented to the management team
