Practical Experience and Practice Reviewer

The Role

The Practice Review program fulfills a mandatory requirement for CPA Alberta to review all registered professional accounting firms and professional services providers who perform assurance, compilation and/or tax services, while providing an educational experience to members and firms.

The Pre-approved programs monitoring fulfills the mandate that all pre-approved programs comply with the Practical Experience Requirements.

Reporting to the Director, Practical Experience, the Practical Experience and Practice Reviewer  is a unique shared role working in both the Practice Review and Practical Experience departments to ensure these requirements are upheld.

The Practical Experience and Practice Reviewer  is responsible for conducting non-assurance/compilation practice reviews, non-assurance practice review program development and monitoring CPA Alberta’s Pre-approved programs.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of post-designation experience and have the ability to confidently discuss review findings with senior personnel of professional accounting firms and large industry organizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor pre-approved programs and reporting on compliance to the Registration Committee.

  • Perform reviews of non-assurance professional accounting firms and professional services providers.

  • Assist with the program development of non-assurance practice reviews.

  • Liaise with national colleagues to identify issues and ensure consistency as related to pre-approved programs.

  • Support the Registrations department in the assessment of member experience for the rights to practice public accounting.

  • Assess experience of Experience Verification candidates, as required.

  • Assist the Directors with departmental goals, plans, and performance measurement, as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline and a Chartered Professional Accountant in good standing.

  • Minimum five years of relevant public accounting experience.

  • The following number of hours, accumulated over any three of the last five years, either directly or through persons under your supervision:

    • a total of 750 hours of audit experience (audit as defined in the CPA Act) and;

    • a total of 1,500 hours of review experience (review as defined in the CPA Act)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize and execute tasks while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
