Our organization:

The Alberta Securities Commission is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Office of the Chief Accountant provides expert knowledge in the areas of accounting, auditing and financial reporting matters to ASC staff as well as guidance to reporting issuers and their advisors. The division also proactively communicates with accounting/auditing standard-setters, professional accounting bodies, audit firms, and other stakeholders in order to make informed policy decisions with respect to accounting, auditing and financial reporting.

The opportunity:

We are looking to add to our team a designated CPA, CA with expertise in technical accounting under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and financial reporting in Canada. Reporting to the Chief Accountant, the Technical Accounting Specialist is accountable for the provision of expert advice in the areas of accounting, auditing and financial reporting for a 12-month contract period.  

The role will provide the successful candidate opportunities to:

  • Enhance their understanding of the capital market, and how the ASC and the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) operate.
  • Gain exposure to interesting issues dealt with by the ASC and CSA, including the ability to work on novel policy projects.
  • Acquire an in-depth understanding of securities regulation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as an expert to staff, management and Commission members through technical research and analysis of accounting issues and preparation of technical papers regarding the application of new/complex IFRSs.
  • Developing and presenting technical training courses on accounting and auditing topics.
  • Participating in the CSA Chief Accountants’ Committee. Leading or participating in other policy initiatives and special projects on an as needed basis.
  • Participating in networking opportunities to both disseminate and gather relevant information. Making outreach efforts to relevant parties as necessary.
  • Assisting with the ASC’s Enterprise Risk Management project. Assisting in the presentation of project status and results to the Senior Management Committee.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Canadian CPA, CA designation is required.
  • An in-depth understanding of IFRS, Canadian Auditing Standards, and the accounting and auditing standard process in Canada and internationally are required.
  • Minimum of five years post-designation experience.
  • Proven experience with the independent application of judgement to complex accounting and auditing issues.
  • General knowledge of the Canadian securities regulatory environment.
  • Strong research abilities.
  • Exceptional skills in problem-solving via independent technical thinking and judgement.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Proven time- and project-management skills.
