Controller

The Controller is responsible for managing the day to day and monthly financial operations of MC College. This includes providing accurate and timely reporting of monthly financial statements using accepted accounting principles, practices, and procedures to the management team of the President, CFO and VP of Operations for the purposes of analysis, budgeting and forecasting and reporting to external agencies The Controller will oversee the company's accounting department and systems and implement changes as required and discussed with President and/or CFO.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
  • Manage accounting operations including the review of journal entries, payroll, accounts receivable, student tuition payments, service/retail payments, accounts payable and statutory reporting.
  • Cash flow management.
  • Ensure Monthly bank reconciliations are completed weekly.
  • Ensure cash spreadsheets are current and reconciled and entered into the accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of deferred revenue and how it applies to our tuition revenue.
  • Set priorities within accounting team with CFO.
  • Maintain and monitor internal controls with CFO to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards and company policy.
  • Work with operations to produce better controls of operational procedures.
  • Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis and reporting to management team.
  • Manage CRA and provincial payments, reporting and accounting requirements as per CFO.
  • Manage reporting and payments to all provincial regulatory bodies.
  • Support new systems or projects and their implementation from a strategic finance and internal control perspective.
  • Generate reports of performance against budgets.
  • Management of foreign exchange transactions.
  • Manage research and development program for CRA and accounting requirements.
  • Supervise, mentor and train accounting team.
  • Follow regular HR requirements as per a member of the management team.
  • Help Process payroll on a bi-weekly basis, make sure payroll is applied to all the standards and regulations; Reconcile the statutory deductions semi-annually.
  • Help issue T-4’s and T2202’s
  • Help train additional payroll processor.
  • Other related duties and required or assigned.
  • Qualifications Required:

  • University degree in Business/Accounting, with professional accounting designation preferred.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects of corporate accounting and financial management.
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant Federal, Provincial and local requirements regarding financial records is essential.
  • Financial analysis, budgeting and strategic planning experience.
  • Knowledge of Sage Accounting computer system mandatory. Advanced knowledge of MS Office and Excel.
  • Management and or supervisory experience an asset.
  • Good project management skills and the ability to motivate teams to produce quality work within tight timeframes.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, problem solving, and organizational skills are essential.
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work.
