Internal Auditor

Purpose: Reporting to the Manager - Audit & Advisory Services, this position is responsible for planning and executing audit engagements in accordance with the annual internal audit plan as approved by the audit committee. Identifies and evaluates business, financial, and IT risk throughout the organization and develops clear and practical recommendations to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the company’s business processes and controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in all stages of internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) assessments, including planning, testing, recommending and reporting.
  • Execute ICFR testing over both design and operational effectiveness, including designing and executing tests using data analytics. Discuss process flows, risks and key controls with management.
  • Communicate ICFR issues and findings to business partners in a clear and concise manner and develops practical recommendations for deficiency remediation or internal control improvement in a timely fashion.
  • Take initiative in the recommendation, design and implementation of new testing methods in response to changes in regulatory requirements or in order to gain testing or operational efficiencies.
  • Work closely and continuously with the Internal Controls team to improve existing process documentation and the control certification process.
  • Maintain regular communication with IT Audit as required to ensure that audit objectives are met.
  • Communicate with and educate business partners on ICFR and equivalent legislation to ensure they understand accountabilities and responsibilities in achieving ongoing compliance.
  • Perform end-to-end operational audits, including developing risk-based audit plans and test procedures, executing the audit, analyzing test results to determine key findings and preparing audit reports for presentation to senior leadership.
  • Develop and nurture relationships with internal business partners.
  • Active member of the audit team; willing to brainstorm issues, complete ad-hoc requests, and flexibility in completing audit assignments.
  • Work with external auditors to enable a combined audit approach. Provide testing documentation to external auditors and guidance as required, answers questions and maintains good working relationships.
  • Work with management to develop solutions and provides value-add consulting services

Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Business Administration or Commerce.
  • Professional Accounting designation and/or Audit designation (e.g. CPA, CIA).
  • Minimum 3-5 years auditing/accounting experience, preferably in either public practice or internal audit settings.
  • A strong understanding of financial assertions, risks and controls with strong operational sensibilities is required.
  • Prior Sarbanes-Oxley (NI 52-109), ICFR and/or risk evaluation experience is required.
  • Knowledge of Institute of Internal Auditor (IIA) standards is an asset.
  • Ability to think outside of the box and exercise professional judgment.
  • Applies knowledge/skills through handling complex problems, takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions; interprets internal business issues and recommends best practice.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using software or tools to perform analytic procedures to achieve audit objectives is an asset (Python, R, Arbutus, ACL, Tableau).
