Senior Financial Accountant (contract position)

The Financial Reporting and Accounting unit is accountable for ensuring the accuracy of the university’s financial information and is therefore responsible for providing the overall direction, planning and coordination necessary for an accurate, strategic and efficient financial accounting and reporting environment.  To achieve its accountabilities, the unit has a significant role in developing and maintaining the university’s financial framework which includes: chart of accounts, internal financial reporting, financial controls, financial systems, internal documentation, and financial University of Alberta Policies and Procedures (UAPPOL).

The unit is responsible for the preparation of the University’s annual audited consolidated financial statements. The University of Alberta is a complex financial statement reporting environment. The University prepares its financial statements in accordance with Canadian Public Sector accounting Standards (PSAS). The University’s consolidated financial statements are consolidated into the Government of Alberta – Ministry of Advanced Education’s consolidated financial statements.

Key unit responsibilities are:

  • Preparation of the university’s annual audited financial statements.
  • Preparation of numerous other external institutional financial reporting requirements and internal financial reporting to senior management and board committees.
  • Research and prepare accounting issues position papers
  • Prepare analysis, working papers, reasonability assessments
  • Preparation of institutional accounting journal entries  (e.g. tangible capital assets, portfolio  investments)
  • General Ledger business owner (administration and controls)
  • Maintain the chart of accounts, reporting trees and internal financial reporting templates (nVision).

The unit currently requires a temporary Senior Financial Accountant (12 month contract) to assist in the day to day operations of the unit while other staff members work on projects and initiatives. There is the possibility of an extension. The position reports to the Chief Accountant & Associate Director.

Duties for the position are:

  • Monthly, quarterly and annual reconciliations.
  • Preparation of quarterly variances in support of financial statements.
  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly internal financial reports.
  • Preparation of monthly GST returns.
  • Preparation of monthly journal entries.
  • Run monthly monitoring reports and analyze the results.
  • Preparation of monthly revenue billings.
  • Data entry of monthly journal entries.

The successful candidate will have:

  • CPA professional accounting designation.
  • Business degree or equivalent.
  • High level of proficiency in Excel, data base query tools.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials and Caseware is would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated initiative and judgement.
  • Attention to detail and produce accurate results.
  • Strong planning, organizational and time management skils and an ability to work deadlines.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

This contract position is in accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package which can be found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca. Salary will be commiserate with experience.
