Controller

The Institute of Health Economics has an immediate opening for a Controller.

About the Institute of Health Economics

The Alberta-based Institute of Health Economics, located in downtown Edmonton, Alberta conveys evidence-based research on complex healthcare issues to provincial and national decision-makers in health policy and practice. The IHE is an independent, not-for-profit organization that receives support from partners in government, academia, and industry, with key competencies in health economics and decision analytic modeling, health technology assessment (HTA), and knowledge transfer/exchange.

Main Role

Reports to the Director of Finance and Administration.  This part-time position (25-30 hours per week) will support the delivery of all aspects of the financial reporting process and special projects. While this role does not have direct leadership responsibilities, the successful candidate will be required to work directly with the senior management team, lead special projects, and liaise with external stakeholders as necessary.

Roles and Activities

The responsibilities of the position will include, but are not limited to;

  • Full cycle accounting including preparation of monthly financial statements
  • Grant reporting and budget preparation
  • Assist with quarterly and year end audit working papers, account reconciliations
  • Working in coordination with the Sr Bookkeeper, you will review payroll and AR/AP data entry 
  • Monitor and manage A/R and cash flows
  • Monitor and manage detailed project reporting in Great Plains software (actual to budget and variances)
  • Produce monthly variance analysis reporting for operational manager/directors
  • Evaluate current processes and recommend process improvements
  •  Monitor, review, update and manage appropriate accounting policies and procedures

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary education and designated professional accountant (CPA, CGA, CMA)
  • 7 + years of accounting experience required with hands-on AP, AR, project/costing, financial reporting, and systems experience
  • Minimum of three years progressive management experience required
  • Experience interfacing with senior management, outside auditors and external consultants
  • Two plus years’ experience with Microsoft Great Plains ERP accounting software, including the Project, AR, AP, Finance modules in addition to Management Reporter
  • Proven ability to organize, plan, prioritize, manage deliverables, problem solve and make effective decisions
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Excel
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accounting procedures
