Manager, Accounting

Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) Canada is a Canadian subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy. BHE Canada is focused on identifying and investing in business opportunities within all aspects of the energy infrastructure market across Canada, as well as electricity transmission internationally; BHE Canada has a particular focus on renewable energy such as wind and solar. BHE Canada is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.

Reporting to the VP, Corporate Development, the successful candidate will fill the full-time position of Manager, Accounting at our Calgary -office location.  As the Manager, Accounting you will be responsible for all day-to-day finance operations, this includes preparation and analysis of financial statements, planning and evaluating controls and accounting standards, preparation of board presentations, audit, insurance and some treasury functions.  You will be required to provide financial, operational, strategic and regulatory advice across BHE Canada companies, and will supervise a small team of employees and contractors.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is able to question the status-quo and make recommendations to create and improve business practices and financial controls as well as effectively manage costs and analyze financial results.

Current scope includes reporting on the corporate development activity to capture business opportunities over $200 million, the reporting of the construction and operation of a 120 MW wind farm and the reporting of a 20 MW gas-fired plant.  As new opportunities are captured, they would come into scope of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Financial Reporting & Audit

     o Prepare consolidated and non-consolidated financial statements with associated notes according to IFRS, including detailed working papers to facilitate the external audit process.

     o Coordinate both internal and external auditing processes and the provision of information to the auditors, as well as managing the engagement of external auditors as and when required. 

     o Manage the process of tracking internal audit findings, recommendations and associated management actions to address identified gaps or weaknesses.

     o Prepare, review and analyze monthly management reports including variance analysis and presentation of the results to senior management.

     o Design and develop KPIs for the business, both financial and non-financial, and ensure ongoing performance reporting as part of the management reporting process. 

• Budgeting and Forecasting

     o Lead the financial planning process, including the preparation of BHE Canada’s consolidated budgets and forecasts and the relevant presentation material for senior management and the Board.

     o Prepare BHE Canada’s 10-year forecast including pro-forma financials, with appropriate level of detail for inclusion in BHE’s consolidated 10-year forecasting, and associated presentation packages.

• Treasury and Finance

     o Take a lead role in financing activities for BHE Canada as well as supporting financing plans for BHE Canada’s growth opportunities.

     o Manage treasury activities including preparation of cash forecasts, bank reconciliations and management of banking relationships.

     o Understand and ensure compliance with all applicable debt covenants and monitor debt levels.

     o Understand and manage any derivative arrangements and ensure that they are properly accounted for in line with IFRS requirements.

• Tax and Insurance 

     o Coordinate the preparation of tax returns and carry out general tax planning activities.

     o Work with AltaLink Insurance and external insurance advisors to ensure that appropriate insurance policies are in place.

     o Ensure that payroll taxes are accurately processed and paid in a timely manner.

     o Ensure that GST reconciliations, payments and claims are properly done and processed on time.   

• General Accounting

     o Manage account receivables and payables including the processing of invoice payments and collection of receivables.

     o Coordinate month end activities such as processing of accruals, depreciation and account reconciliations. 

     o Ensure that intercompany billings and associated reconciliations are done on time and accurately.

     o Ensure that journal entries are processed on a timely basis and accurately.

• Risk Management and Internal Controls

     o Develop and maintain a risk register, highlighting key risks, severity, likelihood of occurrence and corresponding mitigation plans.

     o Design and implement a system of internal controls over accounting transactions including delegation of authority and other relevant controls.

• Policies and Processes 

     o Design, implement and maintain a documented system of accounting policies, processes and procedures covering areas such as governance and HR.

• HR and Payroll

     o Provide support to central office HR and payroll activities. 

• Board Meetings 

     o Prepare material for presentation to the BHE Canada or subsidiary boards covering areas such as annual budgets, forecast updates, 10-year forecasts, budget performance and financial disclosure.

• Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Managing Director and other senior management team members and support activities such as legal proceedings and management of financial records.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Business degree or related education.

• Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA).

• 10-15 years of accounting and reporting, budgeting and forecasting, financial modeling, design and implementation of accounting policies and controls, transactional accounting and cash flow analysis.

• Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office applications, SAP, Simply or similar applications.

• Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills. 

• Exceptional team skills and experience working with senior executives.

• Well vested in IFRS, basic tax requirements, partnerships and Alberta labour standards. 

• Self-starter who can work independently, and balance multiple priorities within tight deadlines.   

• Proven track record of good attendance and job performance.
