Officer, Conduct and Discipline

Reporting to the Director, Conduct and Discipline, the Officer, Conduct and Discipline assists in the administration of CPA Alberta’s conduct and discipline process. The Officer provides support to the Director in the initial review of complaints and the Complaints Inquiry Committee Counsel in the administration of the hearing process.

This position will interest individuals who have:
        •    an interest in the administration of justice,
        •    prior adjudicative experience,
        •    prior experience in a regulatory environment, and/or
        •    a specialization in investigative and forensic accounting.

This role provides potential for advancement in the conduct area to an individual who excels as an Officer and is interested in career development in this area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft communications and reports for the Director, Conduct and Discipline in the initial review of complaints and in support of the Complaints Inquiry Committee.
  • Enforce the CPA Act through the administration of the Act Breach process, including intake of information related to breaches of the CPA Act, liaise with parties to the matter, complete initial risk analysis of breach, maintain files and database related to this process and monitor on-going compliance.
  • Assist in the administration of the hearing process, including: review of issued decisions, maintenance of the precedent database, redacting of decisions for publication and other duties, as required.
  • Assist in volunteer management, including the Complaints Inquiry Committee and the Tribunals Roster.
  • Assist in document retention tasks related to Act Breach and Discipline files.
  • Other projects, as required.

Requirements

  • Must be a Chartered Professional Accountant in good standing with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline.
  • 2-5 years of progressively responsible experience in a regulatory or standards enforcement environment.
  • Additional training in the area of investigative and forensic accounting would be an asset.
  • Adjudicative experience or experience in adjudicative processes would be an asset.
  • Strong report writing and summarization skills are required.
  • Aptitude for legal writing and communication in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to absorb, comprehend and distill legal cases and articles.
  • An investigative mindset and knowledge of internet research techniques.
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
