Financial Controller

The People Placement Group has an immediate opening for a Controller. The Controller is responsible for managing the local Finance team as well as leading day-to-day accounting activities pertaining to all aspects of A/P, A/R, Payroll, Fixed Asset, Cash Flow, Corporate Banking, Month/Year End procedures for our Alberta groups.

This position will report to the Director of Finance and will be based in our Edmonton Office.

Key Accountabilities

 Responsible for monitoring the group's financial performance and formulating strategies to aid with future growth.

 Responsible for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close.

 Presenting financial results every month to the Director of Finance and the local management team.

 

Key Responsibilities

Oversee the operations of the accounting department to ensure the achievement of the department's goals and objectives and monitoring of internal controls.

Preparing GST, IFTA, WCB, T4 Returns

Managing General Ledger and Intercompany account reconciliations

Completing regular month-end and year-end entries and system updates (closing entries, accruals, financial entries, allocations)

Preparing year-end files

Prepare or coordinate the preparation of financial statements, summaries, and other cost-benefit analyses and financial management reports.

Coordinate the financial planning and budget process and analyze and correct estimates

Monitor and account for inventories and operating stocks within company policies and develop standards

Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate department staff

Establish and implement departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures

Represent the company externally to government agencies, funding agencies, and the general public

Manage the audit review process when needed 

 

Education and Experience

Completion of a University program in Business Administration or related discipline

CPA (or CMA or CA) designation

5 years of experience in managing office operations and administration for small to mid-sized service organizations

Experience and knowledge of full-cycle accounting, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, various government fillings, and month/year-end reconciliations is necessary.

  

Required Skills & Knowledge 

Extensive office management experience with the ability to set clear goals and priorities with team members and deliver results on time and on budget.

Knowledge of local Canadian taxation laws ASPE, and IFRS Standards

Expert Understanding of financial statements and budgeting

Proven skills in managing transactions in many different currencies

Expert knowledge and experience of office IT procedures, word processing and spreadsheet applications, including accounting software, email, and web

Professional demeanor and proven customer service qualities

Detail-oriented with expert organizational skills

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with strong presentation skills

Excellent problem-solving abilities, critical thinking capacity and a desire to continuously learn

Must process high degree of initiative and be adept to deal with a constantly changing business environment
