DESCRIPTION:

The senior project accountant will be part of a small team responsible for all aspects of project accounting and project controls and will work closely with various internal and external customers. The senior project accountant position is responsible for monitoring expenditures versus progress of projects, identifying and investigating the cause of variances, and for various internal reporting activities and the co-ordination and assistance with other team members to achieve the project cost expenditure and cost forecasting reporting requirements.  This position is also responsible to ensuring the accuracy of project billings issued to customers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • For primarily Stage 1 (Development) and Stage 2 (approved Capital) projects: ensure all new Project requests meet the PMO flow of information required before opening a project for tracking purposes and review projects from a Corporate Governance perspective
  • Create project accounts in the Oracle accounting system, ensure all projects are classified correctly for reporting purposes, electronically file documents received
  • Maintain project-related records, including approved and pending project Change Authorizations
  • Authorize access to project accounts
  • Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project-related accounts
  • Review the accuracy of supplier invoices related to a project
  • Review the accuracy of time sheets for work related to a project
  • Review and ensure the accuracy of account totals related to project assets and expenses
  • Assist Project Managers (PM) with preparing monthly expenditure forecasts
  • Assist PM’s with preparing monthly cost accruals and load into Oracle
  • Create or approve all project-related billings to customers
  • Respond to requests for additional detail from customers
  • Recommend the write-off for any project-related billings that cannot be billed to or collected from customers
  • Assist financial accountants with the closing out of project accounts upon project completion
  • Prepare government reports and tax returns related to projects for review by Finance
  • Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required
  • Create monthly project cost information for PM’s, functional group leaders and third-party customers.
  • Maintain listing of Contract Billing projects and coordinate billing, analyze gross margins and ensure revenue is received
  • Consolidate cost reporting for portfolio of projects.
  • Validate all Inter-company charges from Contract Billing
  • Assist with the project reporting to management in the following areas:
  • Monthly, year-to-date, and total project expenditures relative to the budget
  • Month-ahead cost forecast relative to the project budget
  • Identify material variances to the project budget for actual and forecast expenditures
  • Assist PM with investigation of project variances and submission of variance reports as part of the regular monthly reporting
  • Assist PM with the preparation of project cost Trend and Change Authorization reporting as part of regular monthly reporting
  • Prepare cost reports on an ad-hoc basis when requested by the PM
  • For major contracts, assist PM with the tracking and reporting of invoices/expenditures, approved change orders, unresolved claims, and forecast total expenditures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong interpersonal, problem solving, presentation and communication skills required to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to deadlines and accuracy
  • Experience in Oracle Financial Systems and project controls and reporting.
  • Advanced Excel skills are preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Engineering, Commerce or an equivalent
  • Professional accounting designation or advanced degree is required (i.e. CMA, CGA, CA, MBA)
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience is required
  • Project accounting experience within a multi-national company.
  • Project Controls Experience
  • Experience with large enterprise applications such as Oracle.
