Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (“EMCN”) seeks applications from experienced professionals to fill openings on its Audit & Finance Committee. Membership on a Board committee of a not-for-profit organization is a rewarding experience, both personally and professionally. About the Organization

EMCN’s core purpose is to enhance the quality of life for newcomers and all Canadians. We see a future where many citizens walk with newcomers to bridge their transition into the community. EMCN offers settlement, counselling, English language, employment, and community engagement programs.

About the Role

The Committee plays a key advisory role, responsible for making recommendations to the Board of Directors on matters related to the financial management of EMCN. The committee also recommends strategic direction with respect to finances, monitoring financial results and activities, and works with cooperatively with the auditor. The Audit & Finance Committee meets a minimum of six (6) times per year and more frequently as required. The committee liaises with the Executive Director and Director of Finance & Operations and reports to the Board of Directors at each board meeting.

Skills and Experience Sought: EMCN is seeking individuals with extensive finance, accounting, and/or business management skills, with an understanding of the role of Board committees in a governance structure. An accounting qualification is desirable. Demonstrated commitment to community involvement will be well regarded, as will a genuine affinity to the work of the organization.

Candidates will be able to:

  • Analyze financial information to identify areas of concern and opportunity
  • Contribute to developing new policies and procedures in finance and risk management
  • Liaise with external auditors
  • Provide oversight to the organization’s risk management framework and processes
  • Identify areas to make EMCN’s finance and risk management more effective and proactive
  • Attend meetings regularly in person and/or virtually

 

Terms

The role will be for one year with option to renew for another term. This is an unpaid volunteer position. All reasonable travel and similar expenses will be reimbursed with prior approval.

Committee membership is not membership on the Board of Directors and committee members do not have a vote on the Board. However, committee members will have the opportunity to be considered for Board membership during the nominations period, if they choose to put their application forward for a Board Director position.
