Summary:

The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing the daily accounting functions of the company including but not limited to accounting entries, account reconciliations, general office administration and subsidiary accounting.  The position is a key resource for the preparation of financial statements, cooperation in internal and external audits, monitoring of internal controls, development and review of business cases in association with our Business Development Team and a key resource for internal stakeholders in financial aspects of their duties.

Job Duties:

  • Entry of financial transactions through the accounting system, ensuring a smooth monthly close
  • Preparation, review and analysis of financial statements for internal and external stakeholders
  • Assistance in preparation of annual corporate budget
  • Maintenance of day-to-day banking relationships including credit card management
  • Assistance with the internal and external audit including preparation and coordination of audits, audit responses and implementing audit recommendations
  • Internal financial reporting and analysis to assist company personnel in decision-making
  • Approval of all payments through accounts payable
  • Capital project accounting including maintaining the corporate fixed asset ledger
  • Cash flow management to ensure efficient use of capital
  • Assist with data modelling for business development opportunities or rate studies
  • Oversight of subsidiary accounting entries including assistance with month end reporting and adherence to internal controls
  • Other duties as required

Job Requirements:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent
  • Professional Accounting designation (CPA – Canada) or nearing completion
  • Additional training in project management is desirable, not required
  • Experience 3-5 years
  • Strong communication skills to a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to solve complex problems and recommend appropriate options in a fast-paced environment potentially impacting other departments including senior leadership
  • Strong computer literacy including MS Office (Excel & Word), MS Dynamics NAV, Budget Maestro, Caseware, Sage
  • Effective time management and task prioritization
  • Adherence and enforcement of company policies and procedures
  • Integration of corporate values into daily duties
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Records Check and Credit Bureau Report satisfactory to the Employer

Working Conditions:

  • Requires 40 hours / week with some overtime required during financial reporting periods
  • Office environment, sitting for extended periods of time
  • Extended concentration and manual dexterity for using computer systems
  • Occasional travel may be required
  • Dealing with multiple competing priorities and the same time
