Project Accountant

The Project Accountant provides essential accounting, budgeting and purchasing support to Financial Services – General Accounting & Procurement teams in relation to RDC infrastructure projects and other projects, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Public Sector Accounting Standards, procurement trade agreements, as well as College policies and procedures.

Responsibilities of the Project Accountant include:

  • Inputs and maintains project budgets in the financial system, including initial set-up and subsequent changes resulting from the changes to the scope or other aspects of the project
  • Maintains project-related records, including but not limited to contracts, purchase requisitions and change orders
  • Prepares and monitors cash flow
  • Investigates and reports to management actual-to-budget cost variances
  • Tracks the financial progress of projects to aid project management
  • Analyses project expenditures to ensure correct accounting treatment and compliance with grant agreements
  • Verifies invoices against projects and maintenance contracts for accuracy and timeliness
  • Assists in sourcing, selection and cost assessments of equipment and furnishings related to the capital project
  • Provides guidance and advice to internal and project stakeholders regarding accounting, procurement and financial policies and procedures, legislative requirements, procurement laws and internal controls
  • Completes sourcing, selection including cost analysis and purchasing processing for goods and services procured through the Campus Management department
  • Assist with completion of various project related yearend and interim reporting tasks
  • Compiles information for auditors and assist with completion of year end schedules
  • Other financial accounting & budgeting and procurement related tasks as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree with focus in Business Administration or Accounting field
  • Professional accounting designation required
  • Knowledge of relevant government legislation, and GAAP
  • Experience working in an integrated financial system
  • Proficiency with MS office suite and other software applications
  • Proven analytical skills
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Excellent planning and time management skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy and consistency
  • Ability to work independently
