About the Job:

 

York Realty Inc. is seeking a Controller with experience in all aspects of accounting to join our team. Reporting to the Director, Financial Reporting, the Controller will enhance the capabilities of the accounting team and assist them with their daily tasks and reporting requirements. The Controller ensures the department is operating at maximum efficiency, productivity, and profitability to achieve corporate goals, objectives, and service levels. The ideal candidate for this role is driven and has remarkable attention to detail, as well as experience managing a small team and is someone who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  • Working closely with the Director, Financial Reporting to maintain a strong level of detail over day-to-day property accounting and corporate accounting requirements
  • Recommend, develop, and implement changes in financial reporting, accounting procedures and internal controls to enhance operational efficiency
  • Oversee Operating Cost Budgeting and Reconciliations by coordinating, reviewing, and working with Property Management and Director, Financial Reporting
  • High involvement of annual budget, quarterly forecasting and quarterly reporting and support in preparation of Annual plans
  • Prepare and defend internal financial statements, supplementary schedules, and reports; ensure they are accurate, valid, and complete within prescribed submission deadlines
  • Prepare variance analysis and can understand the business and explain why these variances occurred
  • Manage accounting team of 3 to 5 staff, including accounts payable and receivable, and property management administration. Tasks include performance appraisal, day to day business challenges, professional development, and accounting guidance
  • Work closely with the Director, Financial Reporting to assess progress, review budget to actual, gross margin reviews, and competencies of financial information
  • Enhance and maintain internal control systems
  • Manage the year-end review process
  • Support the Finance function by assisting with financial data entry as needed
  • Coordinate Shareholder / Stakeholder requirements as needed
  • Payroll function (monthly processing, benefit administration, source deduction reconciliations, preparation of ROEs and T4s)

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is required
  • 4-7 years of total accountancy experience
  • 1-2 years’ experience as a hands-on Controller or in a similar position is an asset
  • Experience in commercial real estate is preferred
  • Experience working in a small-medium sized company environment
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Excel
  • Knowledge of YARDI
  • Ability and inclination to take initiative and demonstrate excellent judgement under tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Proven ability to manage/prioritize several concurrent activities, including tracking and following up to ensure appropriate closure or resolution
  • Strong team orientation and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent English communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to build rapport and communicate appropriately with clients and peers
