Senior Tax Accountant

Reporting to the Manager, The Senior Tax Accountant is a key person in ensuring tax compliance is prepared correctly and in a timely manner. They consider the tax consequences and implications of every transaction upon the company's operations and finances and have a firm understanding of the basic accounting functions across the organization to advise on tax implications.

The Senior Tax Accountant will stay current with the federal, state, and local tax issues that affect the company and understand the legal ramifications of company transactions.

NACG has a team environment; this role works to support the accounting and other teams.

This position is a temporary one year contract.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist with tax provision schedules by reviewing, preparing, and consolidating provision schedules.
  • Preparing corporate, partnership and trust returns (T2, T5013, T3).
  • Recommend tax strategies by researching federal, state, and local taxation issues, provincial and Federal Sales Tax calculation, analysis, and planning.
  • Maintain legislative materials by reviewing, interpreting, and implementing new or revised laws.
  • Maintain compliance with regulations by forwarding required information to federal, state, and provincial authorities.
  • Manage and administer HST/GST/QST/PST/State Tax compliance including monthly returns. Identify and determine self-assessment taxes on relevant transactions.
  • Manage tax audits including, direct interaction and support to tax auditors (both Income tax, HST/GST, US Sales and Use tax and PST audits).
  • Manage forecasting and payments for income and capital tax installments.
  • Provide coaching and training to various other departments on tax-related issues.
  • Identify areas of tax savings by analyzing tax information.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Prepare and file annual NR-4 returns.
  • Assist with the activities of third-party tax recovery firms, assist with, or lead special projects as required.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX and assistance with internal control testing.
  • Provide tax analysis and advice on transactions and to business operations including preparing.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years’ experience related to commodity taxes and/or income taxes. 
  • Minimum five years accounting/finance experience.
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA).
  • Strong understanding of accounting theory.
  • Good research skills are necessary.
  • Highly detail oriented and organized.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet assigned deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus.
  • Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction from manager to accomplish objectives.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results.
