Intermediate Accountant

The Safety Codes Council (Council) is an independent regulatory body established in 1993 under the Safety Codes Act. The Council provides oversight of Alberta’s safety codes system and ten safety disciplines through a number of key mandated functions including:

  • Accrediting and monitoring the compliance of municipalities, agencies, corporations, and regional service commissions in administering the Safety Codes Act within specified jurisdictions.
  • For the 300,000 Albertans who live in unaccredited areas of the province, the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA) division, conducts permitting, inspections and oversees spill and incident reporting requirements for storage tank systems across the province. In the Building, Electrical, Gas, Plumbing, and Private Sewage disciplines, ASCA oversees permitting and inspections services of accredited agencies contracted to perform safety code services on behalf of the Council.
  • Training and certifying safety codes officers to inspect the construction, installation and maintenance of Alberta’s structures and systems and administering Alberta’s Master Electrician program.
  • Reviewing, formulating, safety codes and standards, and evaluating emerging issues in the safety codes system to provide recommendations to Alberta Municipal Affairs.
  • Investigating complaints and conducting investigations on the conduct, performance, or competency of an organization or individual having authority, powers, or duties under the Safety Codes Act.
  • Conducting hearings and appeals of orders and written notices issued under the authority of the Safety Codes Act.

Position Summary:

This is temporary position is an opportunity to advance a career in financial accounting and play a key role in positioning Alberta’s safety code system for the future. The Council is seeking an intermediate accounting professional who will compile financial information into Sage300, complete full cycle AP and AR, and will produce financial reports to support organizational results within a regulatory environment. The Intermediate Accountant reports to the Controller within the context and prescribed limits established by the Chief Executive Officer and the Safety Codes Council policies and guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily processing of Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable including creation of invoices.
  • Managing net payment analysis with reporting.
  • Analysing approval of invoices in accordance to the Council approval matrix.
  • Diagnosing and application of SAGE APA settings to ensure appropriate workflow are followed as outlined.
  • Liaise with external and internal stakeholders in relation to payments, including resolving issues and concerns. 
  • Reconciling daily cash reports.
  • Managing the revenue remittance-tracking sheet.
  • Follow up on late and delinquent payments.
  • Exporting SAGE APA invoices and data into Sage 300.
  • Completing monthly variance to budget analysis.
  • Fulfill applicable month end and fiscal year end duties including reconciliation of balance sheets.
  • Providing value added analysis and recommendations for innovation of current processes.
  • Building and updating internal forms for submission into the Finance department.
  • Assisting in the Annual Forecasting process.
  • Assisting other team members as required.
  • Other financial analysis or special projects as required. 

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Accounting related degree or diploma, with 3-5 years of related experience in a financial reporting role.
  • Experience with Sage ACCPAC and SAGE 300 is considered an asset.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, with technical knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Strong technical knowledge in accounting – experience in PSAS is considered an asset.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change and answer questions.
  • Must have exceptional detail-oriented skills to accurately and quickly enter information into accounting system.
  • Displays strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Displays initiative and proactive disposition.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 

Remuneration: $63,787- $75,043

This is a temporary full- time position until December 31 2022 located in Edmonton, Alberta.
